On May 1, 2026, the last manga volume of the continuation of Jujutsu Kaisen was released. The author was particularly afraid of the big finale, as he admitted in the afterword of volume 3.
What was the author afraid of? In the afterword, both the story’s author and creator of the main series, Gege Akutami, as well as the illustrator Yuji Iwasaki, share their thoughts. They both discuss their concerns during the creation of the manga.
Akutami explains that it would have been the right decision to outsource the illustrations and separate the writing of the story from that. He fears that otherwise some characters would have looked too similar, which would have sparked unnecessary fan theories.
Now he also reveals why he originally didn’t want any of the original characters from the Jujutsu Kaisen anime to appear in Modulo:
Originally, I planned to avoid any appearances of previously existing characters or minimize them, as I was concerned that long-time readers of Jujutsu Kaisen might react negatively.
But as he admits, it turned out that Yuji Iwasaki’s art style was well received by most readers. Therefore, the team decided to show some original characters at the end of the story after all.
Fans judge with understanding
What do fans say about this statement? Akutami seems to have been right in his assessment, as under the translated tweet on X, a user writes that the author suffers from imposter syndrome. The user suggests that the mangaka underestimates himself and his ideas.
After all, JJK is one of the biggest stories in the world and has impacted so many people. He should be proud of his work, as the fans love it.
On the other hand, there are also critical voices who think the ending is a bit rushed, as one of the well-known protagonists appears. A user writes on Reddit that he would have liked to see more fights with old characters.
So it seems that it’s not a problem for fans that the familiar characters from the original anime also appear in Modulo. Only the pacing is what the fans are dissatisfied with.
If you haven’t heard anything about Modulo yet, that’s not a problem. It is a short-term project by the author that continues the events after Jujutsu Kaisen with new protagonists.
