However, there is also the opposite case where an ending simply does not fit with the rest of the story. MeinMMO lists five mangas where fans were disappointed by the ending. Chainsaw Man
What is the ending? The chainsaw devil Pochita realizes that the protagonist Denji was happier at the beginning of the story than after all the traumas he experienced throughout the manga. Although he had to sell organs at the beginning and ate moldy bread, he seemed happier then than he does now.
Therefore, he decides to eat himself and erase the timeline in which Chainsaw Man exists. The result is a more peaceful timeline that ends with a happy ending for humanity. However, Denji lives in an old, shabby cabin and is lonely without Pochita.
Why was the ending unpopular? Due to the time travel, the previous manga felt like a devaluation of the story for many fans. Denji’s character development and all that he has experienced suddenly felt irrelevant. Moreover, the ending was extremely abrupt, which felt to many fans like an extremely rushed finale. Additionally, there were too many unresolved mysteries.
Are there any statements from the author? To this day, there is no statement from manga artist Tatsuki Fujimoto regarding what he was thinking with that ending and whether he regrets it. Also, there is no information about his health condition, which often leads authors to an abrupt end of the story.
However, it could still be that this is a troll from the author. Many fans hope that there is still a hidden chapter in the printed version of the manga. However, the ending, as it currently is in Chainsaw Man, suits the author. Previous works like Fire Punch also had unconventional storytelling and open endings.
