What is the ending? The manga builds up to a big tournament in which the sole ruler of the demon world is determined. Protagonist Yusuke loses to the former ruler Yomi, but Yomi is also eliminated in the next fight.
The real winner is Enki, an old drinking buddy of a former ruler of the demon world. Yusuke returns to the human world and opens a small snack bar.
Why was the ending unpopular? The ending felt too rushed for many fans. The grand tournament that had been built up for so long was wrapped up in only 6 chapters. In comparison, the previous Dark Tournament dragged on for about 60 chapters and makes up almost a third of the entire manga.
Are there any statements from the author? After the end of the manga, the author Yoshihiro Togashi addressed his readers in a self-published fanzine called Yoshirin de Pon! in 1994. In it, he reports extreme psychological and physical problems that he had. He is said to have suffered from chronic back pain and chest pain.
The stress is said to have led to him barely sleeping. He would have felt like just a cog in a machine and therefore wanted to finish the manga as soon as possible.
