What is the ending? To protect his friends, protagonist Eren Yeager wipes out around 80% of humanity. In the end, however, his childhood friend Mikasa kills him.
The island of Paradis, which Eren wanted to protect at all costs, is destroyed by war many years later. Furthermore, a tree is seen at the end that suggests further experiences since it seems to be connected to the Titan powers.
Why was the ending unpopular? Many fans found Eren’s change of heart unexplainable. His sudden intention to eliminate all humanity outside of Paradis felt like a betrayal of his previous character.
Are there any statements from the author? Even the manga artist Hajime Isayama admitted that he is not satisfied with the ending and it feels like a betrayal. He blames his immature younger self, as the ending had been set early, which he ultimately worked towards.
