What is Happy Sugar Life about? Happy Sugar Life follows the young woman Sato and the girl Shio, who live together in an apartment. For Sato, the time with Shio is full of bliss, her “Happy Sugar Life” – for which she works and tries to fulfill all of Shio’s wishes. But Sato has kidnapped Shio and hides her from her brother and the police. Moreover, she has to deal with humiliation at work, sexual harassment by teachers at school, and stalkers in her free time – all of whom stand in the way of her happy life. As the story unfolds, it becomes clearer that absolutely no one in this series is truly happy or even mentally healthy.
Why is the protagonist evil? Already in the first episode, it becomes clear that Sato has psychological problems that promote her evil deeds. Because she does everything to protect her “perfect life” with Shio. In doing so, she does not shy away from threats, murder, or psychological cruelty. Even though Sato is just one of many characters in this show, who are all more aligned with the evil spectrum, it is clear from the beginning that she will not be a classic heroine. The end of the series changes nothing about this.
