What is Death Note about? In Death Note, the eponymous “Death Note” falls into the hands of the perfect student, Light Yagami. With this book, he is able to kill anyone whose name he writes down and whose face he has in mind. After a brief phase of shock, Light realizes that he can turn the whole world upside down. He wants to create a humanity where no one has to fear crimes anymore, as all crimes will be punished immediately and accurately.
His actions attract the attention of global police and investigative forces, who want to identify and capture Light – as his “cleansing” of humanity is a brutal mass murder.
Why is the protagonist evil? Even if Light Yagami would never say this himself, he is clearly the villain of this story. To achieve his goals, he kills ruthlessly. His vision of a perfect world may make him appear to have the questionable moral standpoint of the “good” in this story, but in the end, he accepts no laws and no rights of others. He wants to elevate himself to the god of a new world that, in the end, may be without crime, but in which all people live only in fear.
