What is Code Geass about? In the near future, “The Holy Britannian Empire” has started a major war and annexed numerous countries – including Japan. With the help of modern warfare robots (mech suits), many countries have fallen quickly. The Japanese have been stripped of many rights and now live in “District 11” of the Britannian Empire – they are only contemptuously referred to as “Elevens”.
During a terrorist attack by a resistance group, student Lelouch Lamperouge is caught in a near-fatal incident and gains a strange power: The power of kings. This allows him to give anyone in the world a one-time command that must be obeyed. Thus, Lelouch’s plans awaken to force Britannia to its knees and impose a new order on the world.
Why is the protagonist evil? Whether Lelouch Lamperouge is truly considered evil will be something each viewer must decide at the end of the series. What is clear, however, is that he transforms over the course of the story from a freedom fighter for the Japanese into a dictator who essentially wants to subjugate the entire world. Not only does he come into possession of weapons of mass destruction, but he also uses mind control to achieve his goals. It is not until the last episodes that it becomes clear that he is pursuing a rather noble plan, focusing the entire world on a single enemy – himself. Because when he is then eliminated, there can be a peace that the world deserves.
