Many actors are associated by the public with a very specific role. In some cases, however, someone else was meant for it. Such is the case in Gladiator.
In 2000, Gladiator was released and brought a long-forgotten genre back to the cinema: the sandals film, or monumental film. In it, former general Maximus fights for his freedom as a slave.
The lead role was offered to Mel Gibson, who already had experience with epic cinematic stories. After all, he directed Braveheart, such a film. However, he turned down Gladiator because he was already committed to a project with The Patriot. (via screenrant.com)
Instead, director Ridley Scott chose Russell Crowe, who received an Oscar for the role and entered the collective memory of many blockbuster fans. His performance, including epic speeches, has become legendary. Whether Gibson could have achieved the same remains an open question.
