Many actors are associated with a very specific role by the audience. In some cases, however, someone else was intended for that role. This was also the case in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Tom Selleck can look back on a rich career in films and television productions. However, his greatest triumph was denied to him: the role of Dr. Henry Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the first installment of the popular Indiana Jones series.
Steven Spielberg wished for Selleck as the casting choice. In the IMO Podcast, the director stated that he loved the actor’s audition. In fact, there was nothing standing in the way of the casting until Selleck had to decline.
The reason was a contract with the CBS Network. There, Selleck had already signed for the series Magnum. According to Spielberg, CBS was in a hurry to start filming immediately, so Selleck could not play Indiana Jones. Although Magnum was the breakthrough for the actor, the popularity of an Indiana Jones did not reach that role. Instead, Harrison Ford achieved cult status with it, playing arguably his most well-known character alongside Han Solo.
