Fans of dark comic stories have reason to rejoice, as an upcoming series featuring Batman offers an unusual perspective on the popular superhero. “Super” is initially not at all.
Those who diligently read DC comics will likely recognize “Absolute Batman.” For everyone else: it is a comic series that has been released monthly since October 2024 and is still ongoing. So far, 21 issues have been published.
The Annecy Animation Festival recently announced that the story will be adapted into an animated series. The author of the comics, Scott Snyder, is expected to take a leading role in the project.

Bruce Wayne with real problems
What is Absolute Batman about? The story tells of an alternate universe, where Bruce Wayne is not the super-rich heir who builds his existence as Batman with all that money.
On the contrary, his family comes from the working class. During an attack, Bruce loses his father, while his mother survives. As he grows up, the young man goes to university and builds his life independently – before also becoming Batman.
This version of the dark avenger is much more brutal and fights with an axe. Other characters like Alfred Pennyworth are also present in alternate versions. We at MeinMMO questioned how rich Bruce Wayne is in other versions.
Why are the comics being adapted? The main reason is likely the huge success of Absolute Batman. In 2024, two issues made it to the top 9 of the best-selling comics. According to bleedingcool.com, Volume 1 was even the best-selling issue of the year.
In 2025, two volumes are also among the top 9. And issue 20 alone has sold over half a million copies, according to bleedingcool.com.
Author Scott Snyder emphasizes in a post on Substack that he did not want to repeat the well-known origin story. The origin of Batman should feel like he “belongs to this generation”.
Many young people are likely familiar with the reality of life of Bruce Wayne from Absolute Batman: he is a young person with little money in a world whose future seems unpromising.
When does the series come out? Details about the release are currently not available. It is also unclear which animation studio will be used. However, in October 2025, the illustrator of the original, Nick Dragotta, mentioned in an AMA on leagueofcomicgeeks.com that the Japanese studio Trigger (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) is his personal favorite.
