Sometimes you just have to get lucky in World of Warcraft. It cost only 1 Silver for something that is otherwise worth tens of thousands of Gold.
In the auction house of World of Warcraft, there is basically nothing that is not available. From gray junk items to epic, rare rewards, you can buy almost anything there. However, those who are attentive can occasionally snag a real bargain, as a player proudly shows in the game’s subreddit. He paid only a measly silver coin for something that takes many days of playtime.
What happened? In the WoW subreddit, the player Wolfmaster112 showed a small screenshot of his chat under the title “Someone messed up”. It shows that he snagged a tabard of the Lightbringer for the unbelievably low price of only one silver coin. The assumption: Someone wanted to earn much more gold and made a mistake.
An expensive item from Wrath of the Lich King
What kind of tabard is this? The tabard of the Lightbringer is one of the epic tabards with a use effect. When equipped and used, the character is filled with light – a small visual effect.
Why is the tabard actually more expensive? The tabard is actually only available if you complete the quest line around “Shadow’s Edge”. This was a legendary axe that you could obtain in the expansion “Wrath of the Lich King” in the Frozen Throne. As part of the quest line, there were not only the legendary weapon but also some cosmetic items – such as a portal to Dalaran or Sylvanas’s music box. Among them was also the tabard of the Lightbringer.
If you don’t want to keep the tabard after completing the quest line, you can sell it to others. In the auction house, it usually fetches a value of around 150,000 gold pieces – sometimes more, sometimes less.
So someone has really missed out on a lot of gold.
Why was the tabard so cheap? Why exactly the item was offered for the price of only 1 silver cannot be conclusively said. However, there are several possibilities for how this incident occurred:
- The person simply clicked the wrong button and posted the wrong item in the auction house.
- In the past, it was common to move items through a neutral auction house if you wanted to transfer items from Horde to Alliance. Player 1 would post the item at an agreed time, and Player 2 would buy it immediately to then give it to a character from the other faction of Player 1. However, this method is no longer necessary since the war logistics bank has been implemented. It is possible that a returnee didn’t know that the bank can be used now and made a mistake.
- It was an account dissolution. Some people who want to quit WoW permanently sell all their items (or disenchant them) to ensure they do not come back. If the character has lost everything, this hurdle is often higher.
