In the upcoming update of World of Warcraft, there will be effects specifically designed for solo and outdoor content.
When it comes to “Borrowed Power” in World of Warcraft, which refers to effects that make a character stronger but only active for a limited time, the community’s opinion is often divided. Many enjoy such small upgrades and new gameplay systems, while many are strictly against them. In Patch 12.1 “Curse of Ula’tek,” a variety of thematically appropriate, temporary upgrades are on offer – but almost exclusively for solo content.
This is the addition “Corrosive,” which you can apply to certain equipment. It comes with a special effect.
What kind of effects are there? In total, there are 12 different effects that essentially improve your character. Some increase damage, while others provide more defensive options to help you last longer in tough fights. Here’s a small selection of the most interesting effects:
- Mephitic Cloud: During combat, there is a chance to envelop allies or enemies in a miasma. Affected allies poison their target with spells and abilities, while enemies heal their targets with their spells and abilities.
- Gorgoneion Gaze: If you fall below 50% health, all enemies within 10 meters are petrified for 10 seconds. Petrified enemies are stunned and immune to damage. If the targets free themselves, they become poisoned and take damage every second for 5 seconds from Nature damage, and are slowed by 50%.
- Accursed Poison: In combat, there is a chance to afflict the strongest enemy with a poison that deals damage every second for one minute. When the affected target attempts to cast an interruptible spell, the poison triggers, interrupts the spell, and then removes itself.
- Virulent Mucus: When the fight begins, you gain 5 stacks of toxic slime. Each stack prevents a damage instance that would remove more than 5% of your total health. Dealing damage to a poisoned target has a small chance to grant another stack of slime.
How do you obtain the effects? You receive the effects by collecting “Corrosive Soul.” This is a reward available at the end of Depths and Hunts. You can then apply these souls to bracers and belts to activate a random one of the new effects. If you are dissatisfied with the effect, you must use another soul to overwrite the old one.
The effect you get is always random. However, since the souls are relatively easy to farm and solo players will finish many Depths and Hunts anyway, it is only a matter of time until you receive an effect you like.
Where are the effects active? These additional effects are explicitly only active in areas considered “open world.” This includes the new area, but also Depths, ritual sites, and world bosses – even if the latter will no longer stand in the open world in the future.
This means conversely that the effects are not active in the following locations: Dungeons, Raids, Battlegrounds, and Arenas.
Cortyn says: Even though I’ve approached Borrowed Power with a healthy dose of skepticism since Battle for Azeroth, these effects sound cool and interesting. They are small “nice to have” bonuses that do not define my entire character and fit well with the theme of the patch.
The fact that they are only active in outdoor content has the added benefit that you don’t have to worry about them if you don’t want to. No “Mythic+” pro and no raid player has to farm for a long time to finally get the right Corrosive effects to bring maximum performance in raids again.
They are just small, fine effects that give solo players one more goal to pursue while they complete their content – like Depths and Hunts. I have nothing bad to say about that. It adds a contrast compared to other Borrowed Power mechanics, like the Omnium Folio.
