Even a WoW developer has clear words for the annoying casino bots – and they also have ideas on how to get rid of them.
In World of Warcraft Classic there is currently a plague going around. Not in the form of a nasty debuff that has made history – but in the form of annoying bots that are standing in the capital cities. The casino bots are currently dominating all channels and robbing honest players of their gold. But Blizzard is just as serious about this as the community.
What are the casino bots doing? In WoW Classic, there are currently a lot of characters hanging around in Stormwind and Orgrimmar inviting players to a casino game. Here, several characters give up their money and in the end, it is played for it – mostly over a dice game. The providers entice with the promise of winning a lot of gold.
Can you really win there? No, of course not. These are scammers who simply collect the gold from the participants and disappear. Subsequently, the gold is sold for real euros, and thus the gold sellers make their profit. Anyone participating in these “games” basically has no chance of getting their gold back. Therefore, you should never fall for such scammers and not be tempted.
Senior Game Director has clear words for the bots
What does Blizzard say about it? After these casino bots have been the predominant topic in WoW Classic over the past weeks, Blizzard has also spoken out. On X, Tom Ellis, a Senior Game Producer of World of Warcraft, stated:
This casino thing that is currently so in fashion. I just wanted to confirm that we are keeping an eye on it and it is still against our rules to promote a casino, so keep reporting these characters (or throw infernals at their heads).
Looking at it, it seems that RMT folks (i.e., gold sellers) have realized that this is an easy method to quickly and cheaply acquire gold, which is why this behavior has massively increased.
You have caught the attention of the watcher, and some people are currently looking at ideas on how to get these people out of the game faster so that this activity is no longer as lucrative and hopefully they will get lost as a result.
Don’t expect a big fanfare banner like “Mission accomplished!” This is one of those things you hopefully won’t even notice has been resolved if we do it right.
In the best case, the casino bots should disappear in the coming days due to Blizzard’s intervention or at least be removed significantly faster. Until then, the community will probably still have to help itself.
How is the community handling it? Normally, the Classic community has a rather toxic reputation, but in the fight against bots, everyone is pulling together. For weeks, players have been sharing methods on how to eliminate bots. Warlocks often rain their infernals down on the characters, while others try to impose negative effects on the bots or lure enemies to Stormwind or Orgrimmar to then attack and defeat the bots. The most successful of these actions are then captured in videos and they celebrate each other for it.
