In World of Warcraft, people like to look for a scapegoat. Now they have found one. The Game Director reveals who you have to thank for all the bad things.
The next expansion of World of Warcraft, The War Within, begins the grand World Soul saga, which will span a total of 3 expansions. But that this story even exists is solely the fault of one class in World of Warcraft – at least if you believe the Game Director of the game.
What did Ion Hazzikostas say? In a WoWCast on the WoW website about the upcoming launch of the Alpha of “The War Within”, the antagonist of the expansion, Xal’atath, was also discussed. The elf is actually not an elf at all – and shadow priests who actively played in Legion should already know her. Because priests recovered the dagger and set off many events that unfolded across Legion, Battle for Azeroth, and parts of Dragonflight.
When Hazzikostas talks about Xal’atath, he says:
If you die to a raid boss in The War Within later, then blame the shadow priests. Because they didn’t just put the blade down and then walk away from the talking dagger. Then we wouldn’t be here today.

Is Ion serious about that? No, probably not. Because even though shadow priests used the dagger in Legion, the weapon was already very active in the millennia before that. From the records of the priest order hall, we already know that Xal’atath has interfered in the fate of the world all by herself and has come into the hands of powerful individuals in various ways.
Who is Xal’atath anyway? Xal’atath sets the story in motion in The War Within. This mysterious creature originally had its origin in a Void Elf form during the expansion Legion. Here, it served the priests as an artifact weapon and repeatedly whispered ominous secrets to them. Later, however, Xal’atath was freed from the dagger and received a physical body in Battle for Azeroth.
Most recently, Xal’atath was seen beside Iridikron, as he disappeared through a Void portal.
So if you need a reason to find shadow priests a little bit silly – in The War Within, you have a cause for that.
