As children, you surely accepted that in animes, your favorite heroines transformed into Magical Girls without being disturbed by the enemy. But as adults, one wonders: Why didn’t they ever attack back?
Why do enemies never attack the Magical Girls? On Instagram, the account themetroclassic reports on the findings of part-time lecturer Rikao Yanagita from the School of Science and Technology at Meiji University. He can scientifically explain why the villains stay away from the transformations.
As a basis, he takes all the transformations from the anime Pretty Cure. There, the average transformation time is 58 seconds. So enough time for the enemies to pulverize the girls. However, the opposite is actually true: the enemies would die.
As an example, the scientist mentions the first season of Pretty Cure:
- A colorful rainbow pillar lifts the two girls into the air, surrounded by a shiny protective layer.
- To calculate the required power of light, the scientist uses the formula P = mgc. Assuming the girls weigh 50 kg each, a power of 150 million kilowatts is needed for the two to fly. This corresponds to the energy consumption of all of Japan.
- With a diameter of 3 m that the light pillar could have, a value of 10.4 billion kW is even obtained. This corresponds to three times the total consumption of the entire human world.
- The pillar would thus be 71,000 degrees Celsius hot.
You can imagine what would happen to a being that gets caught in this light pillar and does not have the protective layer of the Magical Girls.
Remember, view these scientific findings with a wink, as they do not represent an official explanation from a mangaka, but rather from a scientist.
Calculation model also applicable to other animes
Does this apply to all Magical Girl series? In Sailor Moon and other animes, a colored layer forms around the skin, similar to Pretty Cure. For example, loops emerge that envelop the body and could thus serve as a protective layer.
Thus, the protagonists from other animes also possess a protective layer so they are not pulverized by the light.Â
In Sailor Moon, the warriors are named after the planets of the solar system. Did you know that there is even a Sailor Earth in Sailor Moon? However, she doesn’t quite fit in with the other warriors: In Sailor Moon, there is a Sailor Earth, but she is different from what you expect
