The 4 Chaos Gods from Warhammer 40,000 are trapped in a constant dispute for supremacy. But which of them is the worst? MeinMMO asked someone who should know, and even they didn’t want to answer.
In Warhammer 40,000, the realm of Chaos is one of the greatest dangers to humanity and the Emperor is engaged in a constant battle with its four gods. But which one is actually the worst?
A few weeks ago, the developers at Auroch Digital introduced me to “Boltgun 2” and I was allowed to play a bit. Although I don’t like boomer shooters, I really enjoyed the game and in conversations with the devs, it seemed clear that they really know their Warhammer.
So we took the opportunity to ask for an interview. The leading designer of Boltgun 2, Matt Bone, eventually agreed to answer our questions. On Sunday you’ll find the full interview on MeinMMO, but I want to share one particularly exciting answer with you today.
“They would hunt and slaughter me immediately”
In Chaos, the four gods Nurgle, Tzeentch, Khorne, and Slaanesh each rule their own domain. I have already clarified in a power ranking of the Chaos Gods which of them is the most powerful but wanted to have an expert answer from Matt.
Auroch Digital works closely with Games Workshop. As one of the few Warhammer games, Boltgun 2 also features all Chaos Gods in the game. When I asked which of them would be the most dangerous – both in the game and in the lore – Matt replied:
I could say, but one of the other factions would immediately hunt me down and slaughter me. Honestly, I’d say they’re all equally dangerous – hence all the endless war. For Boltgun 2, it’s important that each feels lethal in their own way, and that we really lean into each Chaos faction’s flavour.
That goes for small touches as well as big behavioural ones – for example, shooting Nurgle marines results in a spray of maggots and pus, whilst Thousand Sons use Warpy dust-like FX instead of blood.
Matt Bone, Lead Designer of WArhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2
What Matt is referring to is the Chaos Gods’ “Great Game”: a war in which they themselves are trapped and which they can never win. For if ever a god defeats all the others, there would be no more chaos, but a certain order.
With that in mind… since Matt mentioned that “another faction would slaughter him,” it can only be Khorne. And Khorne’s opponent in the Realm of Chaos is Slaanesh. But I will leave you alone with that thought.
Which Chaos God do you think is the most dangerous? Leave us a comment!
By the way, the four gods in the Realm of Chaos are not alone anymore. Already in Age of Sigmar, there is an official fifth god, the Horned Rat. But also in Warhammer 40,000, there are signs since the last trailer that the Warp is significantly more active than expected: Everyone is talking about the Emperor, but Warhammer 40,000 has casually shown the Chaos Gods and there are more than 4
