The announcement that Sony no longer wants to produce discs has shaken fans. Now the fans are responding to it.
Sony does not want to produce discs in the long term. The future is purely digital, and the era of media for the company’s consoles is therefore over. At the same time, however, the news is spreading that Sony has removed hundreds of purchased movies from StudioCanal from players’ libraries.
Both pieces of news have therefore combined to create a kind of Molotov cocktail, resulting in one of the biggest shitstorms Sony has faced in a long time. The company is inundated with hateful messages, insults, and accusations at all levels.
And the shitstorm also triggers a reaction from Sony, which is almost inaudible amidst the loud storm.
Silence as a Response
How does Sony respond? Since their announcement and the associated shitstorm, the PlayStation account has not published any new posts cross-platform. There has been a radio silence at Sony for almost two days.
Only the YouTube channel continues to post trailers and videos. Although they are likely posted in consultation with other developers, with Sony as the publisher, the trailers and videos receive many sharp comments, clearly showing what would happen if Sony were to return to its other platforms now.
Because no matter if on X.com, Facebook, Bluesky, or Instagram, Sony is currently silent. But players are also aware of this silence and respond in a Reddit post.
How do fans react to the silence? Fans are still quite angry. They do grant Sony some sympathy points for the upcoming blockbuster release of GTA 6, but the fact that the game cannot be purchased on a disc also frustrates fans just as much. Accordingly, the comments sound pretty harsh:
- GamingIndustryIsFcck: “Your official PlayStation YouTube channel has uploaded six new videos since the announcement, and you can already imagine what’s going on in the comment sections.”
- PassedMyShrugTest: “They have sweet-talked their way into GTA 6, but got a MW2 lobby instead.”
- Original-Drink-6178: “If I am forced into pure digital gaming, I would rather switch to Steam and PC than be trapped in Sony’s crappy digital ecosystem.”
- Greenfire32: “They didn’t just kill physical releases. They killed them exactly at the moment when they infringed on people’s libraries and deleted content for which those people had paid.”
- Lost-Produce-1150: “They thought they were safe with GTA 6. And they’re right that they will benefit greatly from it. But they should worry about what comes after that. The mood towards PlayStation hasn’t been this bad since the early PS3 days.”
