With Dragonfire, a new update is celebrating its launch today, August 31, 2026, in Albion Online, adding perhaps the best PvE content to date to the sandbox experience of the MMORPG.
What do I need to know about Dragonfire? The new update for Albion Online is now live and brings the following highlights:
- The Ancient Lands, a collection of floating islands connected by portals where you will encounter dragons and other players.
- The new raid in the Dragon Sanctuary, where you can challenge the fire dragon Azaryon and earn a special dragon mount.
- Dragon attacks in the open world promise valuable loot.

Solo players, groups, raids, PvE and PvP fans – there’s something for everyone!
What makes Dragonfire so special? For the Berlin team from Sandbox Interactive, it was clear that the premiere of dragons in Albion Online deserved a special update. Accordingly, a lot of time, energy, and passion have gone into Dragonfire over the past months – that’s what Creative Director Michael Schwahn and Senior Content Manager Phil Hucknaall revealed to us.
One goal of Dragonfire was to create content that can be enjoyable for both PvE and PvP fans, solo players, groups, and raid enthusiasts. The result is one of the largest and most elaborate updates in the history of the MMORPG, which unfortunately cannot be repeated regularly with the current team size.
The new Ancient Lands beautifully reflect this goal: you can explore them solo, with a small group, or with a team of up to 20 players. The matchmaking in the background ensures that your potential human opponents possess a similar character strength and are also playing solo, in a group, or a raid.
You have the choice of how long you want to deal with the local PvE opponents for loot. The deeper you delve into the Ancient Lands, the greater the risk, but also the potential rewards. Those who defeat the 4 young dragons will ultimately unlock access to the new raid to face Azaryon in a pure PvE encounter.
The Ancient Lands shine with an exciting element: the accesses from one island to another must first be activated, allowing all players present on the map to see where the potential opponents are currently roaming.
Over time, however, this type of traceability becomes increasingly difficult, as players can eventually also use the already existing accesses of others. This creates an exciting strategic element.
Another great idea for the Ancient Lands is the new bleeding mechanic. Players who are downed suffer from the eponymous bleeding and can rejoin the loot hunt if their allies can win the fight. However, there remains a stackable debuff that becomes stronger with each death. The bleeding only disappears when you escape from the Ancient Lands.
What can you expect from Azaryon? The premiere of dragons really put the developers to the test. After all, the new creatures had to behave like dragons and use powerful fire attacks. So, special animations, cool flame effects, and a new threat system were needed.
Moreover, for the first time, Azaryon created a raid fight with multiple (five) phases that differ significantly from one another. In one phase, for example, you have to collect fire bombs and use them strategically to clear the sources of the bombs. However, this is only possible if you gather enough firepower through multiple bombs to destroy them. If you fail to do this, the bombs will cause a wipe.
If you emerge victorious from this battle, the successful raid participants can, with a bit of luck, receive a special dragon egg. You can hatch this egg to obtain a dragon hatchling that you must feed and raise (with other mounts). In this way, you will ultimately receive a mount that ranks among the best in the game – it is really good in everything (especially survivability), but there are faster alternatives or better pack animals.
How long do beginners need for the new content? You can already participate in the open world attacks very early since they also take place in the yellow zones. Those who participate automatically receive a reward. The same applies to dipping into the Ancient Lands since the matchmaking ensures comparably fair encounters.
However, for Azaryon, you will need a raid group of 20 people who coordinatedly go dragon hunting and have pretty good equipment.
