In GTA 6, you do not have to limit yourself to one character and can switch between the two protagonists. However, Rockstar wants to consciously restrict you in this game full of freedom, but not without reason.
How are you restricted when switching characters? Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North and head of development, explains in an interview with the magazine Famitsu (translated by GameRadar+) that you can switch between characters in GTA 6 just like in its predecessor.
However, there are moments when this freedom of choice is taken away, and you are meant to play as Lucia or Jason. This is not intended to be an unnecessary restriction, but rather to provide players with a better experience.
Rockstar wants to tell a more natural story
Why does Rockstar restrict character switching? In the interview, Nelson explains that the switch between Lucia and Jason is restricted by the progression of the story. There will be moments when you cannot switch for specific reasons, and missions where players are completely free to choose.
This is because certain missions are intended to be experienced from the perspective of a specific character.
He also gives an example:
There is a mission that takes place in a high-rise complex, where you could previously switch freely between characters. However, we felt it was more natural for Jason, as a former soldier, to take control, and therefore decided to assign the character.
Since the mission takes place early in the game, we thought it was unnatural for Lucia to take the lead and give instructions as they move through the area.
Also, in the nearly 27-minute insight on Netflix and YouTube, there is a mission from GTA 6 in which switching is not prohibited but anticipated. While Lucia and Jason are fleeing from the police with Raul in the back seat, you can first shoot at the pursuers as Jason before a cutscene begins. After the scene, the typical “switch sound” and effect that you also know from GTA 5 occurs, and you are now driving as Lucia.
Nelson says that some missions are specifically designed for this, while others can be entirely determined by the players.
What do you think of this approach? Do you think it’s annoying that you cannot switch at any time? Or do you think it’s right that Rockstar prioritizes the story here? Let us know in the comments!
Perhaps it is also more relaxing if the decision between characters is taken away, because in GTA 6 these play a much more relevant role than one might expect from a GTA title: Anyone playing GTA 6 like before will fall flat on their face – whether in heists or in love
