The head of Warframe shares a few words about the death of Destiny 2 and tells a personal story highlighting how important Bungie and its games were for gaming.
This is the head of Warframe:
- Rebecca Ford has been the creative director of Warframe since 2022. Prior to that, she worked for many years as the community manager of the sci-fi MMO.
- She started as an intern at Digital Extremes in January 2011.
- From April 2012, she worked as a community manager and PR assistant, engaged with players and the press, and became the voice of the game.
“Played more Halo than you can imagine”
This is what she says about the situation of Destiny: On May 21, 2026, Bungie announced the end of Destiny 2. The game will still be playable, but the final update “Monument of Triumph” will be released on June 9, before the loot shooter enters maintenance mode.
Rebecca Ford wrote a few lines about the death of Destiny 2 on X. She begins with an anecdote from her youth, recounting how she played way too much Halo with her best friend.
At the age of 16, my best friend (who gave me the name ‘rebulast’) and I picked up our copies from the midnight release of Halo 3, raced home, told our parents it was important, and played more Halo than you can imagine.
She then says: “There is no Warframe without the legacy of Bungie games” and recalls the release of the loot shooter: “Destiny was and is a force of nature, loved and carried by the hands of so many people who were a part of the greatest thing in gaming for a moment.”
She then mentions the end of Destiny again and writes:
I am 16 again – I am 35. I make Warframe, I say goodbye to the only constant pillar I could look up to. I am responsible for my own fate. This is a misery for so many – and people are the only reason for the good and the bad in it.
You are 16? You are 35? You are still someone who knows better than to act without empathy! Is this ‘The End?’ This is reality. Is this business? Yes, and in business, one knows that one should not try to compete in the same field. Do not offer comfort through comparisons!
Many players thank Rebecca Ford in the comments for these words. Some agree with her that Destiny is indeed a force of nature, while others express their sadness about the game’s end. One user writes that Destiny and Warframe are two sides of the same coin and that to have the best gaming experience, one must play both. Now he is sad because he is losing one side of this coin.
Did Bungie really influence Warframe? In the comments of the post, there are also some doubters who claim that Rebecca Ford started at Digital Extremes too late and was not involved in the concept phase of Warframe at all. The original concept work actually began as early as 2000, before the actual development of today’s Warframe started in 2012. Users are questioning to what extent Bungie games really had influence. Ford’s anecdote would not be evidence for that.
However, Rebecca Ford shows with her story what influence Bungie and the studio’s games had on the gaming industry. Many developers played Halo in their youth. Some users counter that one can see in Warframe that Bungie influenced some of the developers, and they probably know the inspirations of their team best.
Moreover, many are sure: Rebecca Ford was extremely important for the current success of Warframe and played a key role in navigating the sci-fi MMO through tough times – whether she was there from the beginning or not. And she ultimately shares about the influence that Halo and Bungie had on her as a person.
Destiny not only had a great influence on Rebecca Ford but on many players around the world. They react emotionally after the announced end of the second part. Many are sad: “As if someone ripped a piece from my chest” – The Destiny 2 community mourns their MMO shooter
