A part of the Bungie workforce had known for a while that the end of Destiny 2 was planned, and this had an impact on the employees.
This is the situation at Bungie: On May 21, 2026, Bungie announced the end of Destiny 2. Reportedly, a large part of the workforce only learned at this time that the loot shooter will not receive further updates after the final expansion in June.
According to a report from Forbes, Bungie is said to have continued to let its developers work on new content for Destiny 2. Part of the studio’s resources is said to have been shifted to Bungie’s new extraction shooter, Marathon.
Overall, Marathon is said to be supported by Sony with more resources and a number of former “Destiny” employees, who are now joining the already transitioned employees, as stated.
How did the end of Destiny 2 further divide the studio? Since a part of the workforce already knew of the end of the loot shooter while another part was not informed and was said to still be working on new content, the workforce has reportedly divided according to the Forbes report.
The already informed employees are said to have felt extremely isolated and pleaded with the company’s executives to be allowed to tell more people within the studio.
What happens next? Contrary to a leak from November 2025, Destiny 3, according to industry insider Jason Schreier (Bloomberg), is currently not in development at Bungie. Moreover, the studio is said to be facing further layoffs.
The Destiny community wants to prevent the end of the successful loot shooter franchise and has started a petition to persuade Sony and Bungie to develop Destiny 3 instead of completely abandoning the series.
