Apparently, the entire gaming world mourns together with the community for Destiny 2. Despite some issues, the end came as a surprise to many. As a gaming journalist now reports: Not only for the players was the announcement out of the blue.
On May 21, developer Bungie announced that the final update for Destiny 2 will be released on June 9, 2026. The shooter will remain playable, but without future content. Destiny 2 was released in 2017 and received an expansion called Renegades in December 2025.
For many players who have invested a lot of time in Destiny 2, the announcement probably comes as no complete surprise, but they still mourn together as a community. Many developers also likely didn’t know before the announcement that the game would not receive any more content, at least that’s what a well-known journalist claims.
I can imagine how hard that was
What does the journalist say about the developers’ knowledge? In response to a user’s question on x.com, regarding how long the developers had known this was happening, Paul Tassi replied that most at Bungie were unaware before it was announced.
Paul Tassi is a journalist who works for the English-language magazine Forbes and has been writing about Destiny and Bungie for years. He is thus an expert on the topic who is also connected to the environment. To his response on x.com, he adds that there were some developers who were working on the June update who knew but were not allowed to share it. He simply writes: I can imagine how hard that was
.
In response to another user’s question on x.com, he emphasizes again that the developers continued working on Shattered Cycle, an expansion that will no longer come, until the announcement.
So far, there has been no official information from either Sony or Bungie regarding this.
What happens to the developers at Bungie? According to an article by Tassi on Forbes, Destiny 3 is not in development and some of the resources are supposed to have gone to Marathon. In his article, he confirms the news from Jason Schreier (via Bloomberg) that layoffs are expected. He claims to have learned this from sources familiar with the studio’s plans.
Jason Schreier is an industry insider who has many contacts in the industry and has previously reported in advance on many layoffs.
There has not been an official announcement from either Sony or Bungie regarding this topic. However, considering the size of Bungie (about 800 developers according to Tassi), the studio would need a new project for such a large number of developers.
By the latest after the last update in June, one can expect to receive official information regarding the future of Bungie. MeinMMO shooter expert Dariusz Müller has meanwhile looked into why Destiny 2 has likely died: How could Destiny 2 die, although it was once so successful? 5 reasons that led to the death of the loot shooter
