The cat is out of the bag: After Kingdom Come Deliverance II, Warhorse Studios has announced their next two projects. More Kingdom Come Deliverance and an RPG based on The Lord of the Rings. MeinMMO editor Sophia Weiss is already popping the champagne bottle.
What has been announced now? In a post on X.com from May 20, 2026, Warhorse Studios announced their next two gaming projects. On one hand, there is supposed to be a new Kingdom Come adventure. On the other hand, they confirmed all the recent rumors: They are working on an open-world game based on “The Lord of the Rings”.
MeinMMO editor Sophia Weiss has seen the announcement and is currently celebrating in the office. Because this game could be everything a Middle-earth fan could wish for.
Make way, Amazon! Warhorse takes over Middle-earth!
The Lord of the Rings has accompanied me since my teenage years, especially intensely since I fell into a big lore hole about Glorfindel including the Silmarillion in summer of 2025. During that time, I have looked for really good Middle-earth games and was initially incredibly excited about the MMORPG that was supposed to be created by Amazon Games. Then came the layoffs and the likely premature end of the project.
I was so frustrated and sad that I even played the ancient – but still excellent – Lord of the Rings Online: I was really looking forward to Amazon’s MMORPG for The Lord of the Rings – Now I’m questing with Elrond in the original from 2007 and it’s old, but oh wow!
And now, of all people, the creators of Kingdom Come Deliverance are supposed to develop a new RPG around Middle-earth? With an open world? The people whose RPGs have been recommended to me for about eight years by a whole range of different friends from various friend groups? (I apologize to Phil and Steffi – I simply haven’t had time yet.)
If Warhorse Studios puts even a fraction of the energy, commitment, and attention to detail into Middle-earth as they have done for the Kingdom Come games, this game has the potential to become the best game based on the IP so far.
Because: Kingdom Come Deliverance is really good – as also stated by our editor Karsten Scholz about the second game.
Of course, it’s now a matter of waiting and Warhorse Studio getting their ducks in a row. But when I look at the slight fumbling in communication at Amazon compared to the stellar track record of Warhorse Studios? Well, I know whose project I will be betting on.
