The fate of the MMORPG for Lord of the Rings by Amazon Games is still unclear. A new statement doesn’t shed much light on the matter but keeps hope for a comeback alive.
What is the new statement now? Eurogamer has published a new statement from Amazon’s Head of Games Jeff Grattis. The editorial team asked the chief about the status of the MMO for Lord of the Rings. The team reportedly has confidential sources that confirm that the game has ultimately been cancelled.
You can read his response translated into German here:
Our creative team continues to work on developing an engaging new gaming experience that does justice to Tolkien’s world; we are closely collaborating with Middle-earth and are still excited about this IP.
What does this mean? As Eurogamer writes, this would mean that the MMORPG has ultimately been cancelled. However, the colleagues from MassivelyOP note that this does not necessarily confirm the cessation of development.
After all, the statement does not explicitly state anywhere that development has been halted. What this new gaming experience is about, Grattis leaves out in his response. It could pertain to either the MMORPG or an entirely new game from a different genre.
Therefore, there is still a chance that the MMO has not completely ceased. It may be that Amazon Games is still considering a strategic shift, as has been the case in other areas.
MMORPG department shrinks to a minimum
What about MMORPGs at Amazon Games? Even if the chances for the Lord of the Rings game are higher than 0%, the odds of it ever being released as an MMO are low. In terms of MMORPGs, the company is significantly scaling back:
- In January 2027, the servers for New World will be shut down.
- For Lost Ark and Throne and Liberty, Amazon Games is increasingly withdrawing from publishing.
Moreover, an entry for the Lord of the Rings MMO has been removed from the site. Why all this is bad news for the future of MMORPGs at Amazon Games can be read in the following article: No new MMORPG for Lord of the Rings: Amazon removes last hint of the project
