In this edition of the MeinMMO format “What we are playing this weekend”, MeinMMO editor Alex shares his thoughts on why the unfinished Soulframe is currently becoming one of his favorite games and why especially MMORPG fans should keep an eye on the fantasy game from the Warframe creators, even though it is not a “real” MMO.
This is what I am playing this weekend: Soulframe has been with me since June 2025, when the gates were briefly opened for all interested parties. Admittedly, it was confusing, chaotic, but quite pretty at the time. I really didn’t get into it back then, though. After just a few hours, I gave up on the game and turned to others.
Meanwhile, you can gain access to Soulframe by obtaining a key from friends or purchasing one of the founder packs. After all, the game is still in an early alpha phase called Preludes, which already offers many hours of gameplay content according to the developers.
What is often referred to as “the new fantasy MMO from the creators of Warframe” still wouldn’t leave my mind. A Warframe equivalent in a fantasy setting sounded like a dream come true for me. When a patch followed that was supposed to make the entry significantly easier, I decided to take another look – and I was not disappointed.
However, as my colleague Karsten noted in his preview of Soulframe: You will not find a proper MMORPG here. There are no crowds of players or classic MMORPG content. Instead, it is more of an action RPG with (currently) smaller multiplayer and coop elements, but it can also be played completely like a single-player game.
But that doesn’t stop me and my friends from playing it like an MMORPG, as the game certainly allows for that.
As a passionate role-player, both digitally and analogously, he is also at home in many A- and C-RPGs and loves to bury himself deep in fictional worlds and adventures. Thus, the immersive and beautifully crafted world of Soulframe intrigued him all the more, as he already knew what the developers from Digital Extremes had accomplished with Warframe: 14 years of growth with a strong, engaged community and versatile, unique content.
MMORPG experience without real MMORPG content
This weekend, we will also dive into the atmospheric world of Midrath. Almost everything that can currently be played in Soulframe can also be done in coop. All players follow the host’s quests and receive the completions and rewards for them.
This way, you can complete the current story, as well as all side quests and dailies together, which is much more fun than just wandering alone across the expansive map. Despite not being a real MMO, it still brings some MMO feeling.
What makes the biggest difference for us is that the game can also be played, to some extent, in a Holy Trinity of Tank, Healer, and Attacker, as found in larger MMORPGs. This allows for group dynamics to be coordinated and various builds and combinations to be experimented with.
Thus, you can already assign group tasks through the pacts, which essentially represent the classes of Soulframe (even though there is currently “only” one real healer who can heal significantly and actively, and a second one who at least heals a bit with lifesteal).
A particular strength is that you can also play with various weapon combinations, as long as the values allow it, leading to countless combinations to optimize the joint group play. Thus, we run through the dungeons together, fight against bosses, farm reputation for our factions, complete sieges, and finish small quest chains – just as we would in our favorite MMOs. And all this in a truly beautiful, immersive world with a lovely premise focused on nature.
For me and my friends, Soulframe is currently the perfect after-work game, into which we have already poured over 50 hours, and certainly more this weekend alone. We can only recommend everyone who likes MMOs and can find something in the trailers to take a look for themselves. The game is constantly changing due to its developmental status, making it worthwhile to check back often.
New weapons and pacts are also being added constantly, which grant you new abilities. For instance, in one of the last updates, the Duelist Pact was introduced, allowing you to gain the abilities of a pirate: If you love pirates, you can now play something like a pirate in the fantasy MMO of the Warframe creators
