If you look at the statistics for World of Warcraft, it becomes clear: One class is much more popular than all others.
World of Warcraft offers a lot of choices on how to play the MMORPG. With a whopping 13 classes, there should be something for everyone. But those who think that all classes are played approximately equally are very mistaken. Because there is one class that overshadows all others and has been on an unbroken winning streak for years.
Which class is the most popular? By a significant margin, the most popular class is the Paladin. A hefty 12.9% of all max-level characters are Paladins. This data can easily be found on the page DataforAzeroth. Even if not all WoW accounts are recorded there, it’s still a solid amount that provides a good impression.
The Paladin has so many reasons why he is popular
Why is the Paladin so popular? There are many reasons why the Paladin is so popular. On one hand, the Paladin can fulfill all roles in a group – that is, tank, healer, or DPS. This makes the character already very versatile, so depending on mood or group members, one can basically fill any role.

In addition, the Paladin has also received a strong overhaul with Dragonflight and shortly thereafter, along with “The War Within”, very thematically fitting and interesting talent trees. This created further momentum.
Especially the Retribution Paladin has benefited the most from this – this is also the most popular specialization in the entire game.
It is also likely that playing as a Paladin in the current expansion Midnight fits thematically very well. Especially as a Blood Elf Paladin, that is as a “Blood Knight”, the expansion of the class is practically tailored to them – but all other Paladins also fit excellently into the setting. So it should not be surprising if some have chosen a Paladin mainly because of the story.
Which classes are also popular? Relatively close behind the Paladins are Druids with 11.7% of all max-level characters. That is still a considerable amount, and the reasons are likely similar. Because the Druid can fulfill all roles in a group and even has a ranged specialization. However, since only a quite limited number of races can become Druids, this may pose a small hindrance.
In 3rd place are the Hunters with 9.5%. Hunters have a unique mechanic with collectible companions and always have a tank by their side when they want. Especially Night Elf Hunters enjoy great popularity. Moreover, Hunters have always been considered a quite beginner-friendly class.
Which class is the least popular? When looking at the pure numbers, the Evoker is the least popular class in World of Warcraft. Only 3.4% of all characters at max level are Evokers – that is only about a quarter of the number of Paladins. However, these numbers are slightly skewed. Because Evokers have exclusively the Dracthyr as a race to choose from and are also the newest class. Perhaps even more alarming is that Rogues – one of the core classes of the game – stand at only 3.7%. We already explained the reasons for this in this article.
