Despite recent events, Season One of The Elder Scrolls Online regarding the “Return of the Thieves Guild” has launched as scheduled. Whether there will be another major update for ESO remains unclear.
What does Season 1 bring? The new season surrounding the “Return of the Thieves Guild” comes with some exciting new features, but not all will be available immediately at the season launch. Already, you can expect the following content:
- a new storyline for the Thieves Guild, where you assist Quen in establishing a new branch of the guild while facing off against the dangerous Koldane cartel
- the Favor system, a new type of daily quest designed to tell larger stories
- the dynamic encounters system, which will be awaiting you in Glenumbra, Auridon, and Stonefalls, featuring multiple phases
- a fresh Tamriel Compendium for Season One
- the update of the Gold Coast Bazaar
The further roadmap for Season 1 looks as follows:
- July 29: a new storyline revolving around Sheogorath, embarking on an adventure through Tamriel
- September 12 (with Update 51): the Nowhere Vault, a type of puzzle dungeon for solo players
- September 12 (with Update 51): new trial for 12 players: Crimson Steppe
- September 12 (with Update 51): the Rumors system, featuring non-linear clues that you can find throughout the world
- September 12 (with Update 51): general improvements to the player experience
- September 30: Event Tamriel High Seas
Season 1 is set to run until October 21, 2026. You can watch the trailer for the new season here:
A big question mark for the time after Season 1
What comes after Season 1? There had already been a fairly concrete roadmap for the rest of the year. Season 2 was supposed to take us deep into 2027 after Skyrim, aka Tamriel. For the revamped version of the iconic region, the developers promised a very special gameplay experience, with the new dynamic events playing a crucial role.
However, much has happened since the announcement of the roadmap. The Zenimax Online Studios team has been significantly reduced by Microsoft. 213 former employees have already reported being affected to the state of Maryland. It is currently completely unclear how the remaining developers will be able to provide new content for the MMORPG in the future.
What is clear: The current roadmap is no longer valid. Community Manager Jessica Folsom has already informed players that they now need to take the time for an updated roadmap.
How does it look: Are you diving back into Elder Scrolls Online for Season 1 or have you already written off the MMORPG? Let us know in the comments! Particularly bitter in all of this: The game has been extremely successful for over a decade: Elder Scrolls Online is said to have financed failed projects with its billions in revenue, now fighting for its own survival.
