The Boys is ending in a few days with Season 5. However, there are still some points from the story that need to be addressed, but the series does not have much time for that.
On May 20, it’s finally time: The Boys will conclude after 7 years and so will the stories of many characters on both the good and the bad sides. According to showrunner Eric Kripke (via Collider), the final episode is expected to run for about 65 minutes, so there won’t be an excessively long finale.
That’s not a long time when considering how many story points are still open. A YouTuber summarized them in a video, and it seems impossible for all to be satisfactorily addressed.
Warning Spoilers: The following article discusses storylines up to the 7th episode of Season 5 of The Boys. Anyone who hasn’t seen this episode should read the article later.
Many characters and stories in just one hour
Which plot points are still open? In a YouTube video, content creator Jonathan shows which stories from the last season of The Boys are still open. He reaches 12, which we will summarize and categorize for you.
- Oh-Father and the mind-reading Supes
- The story behind Oh-Father and the Supes who can read minds was already shown in the 7th episode. Homelander wants to know who doesn’t really believe in him and then get rid of them. We will most likely see the full extent of this idea in the final episode to fully unfold Homelander’s plan.
- Soldier Boy’s fate
- Soldier Boy will not appear in the final episode. In an interview with Collider, Eric Kripke explained that Episode 7 included the last scene of Jensen Ackles, the actor playing Soldier Boy.
- Kimiko’s new ability
- It can be expected that Kimiko will use her abilities in the final episode, especially since she is connected to the tragic fate of Frenchie, allowing for a narrative arc.
- What about Gen V?
- This becomes quite convoluted as Marie and Jordan are seen, but according to Starlight, Marie cannot control her powers (unlike in Season 2 of Gen V). Since Gen V has played a rather minor role throughout the season, it’s also possible that the characters are seen only briefly in the finale, but have no relevance to the story.
- How does Ashley’s story end?
- So far, Ashley’s path in the season seems to lead nowhere. She hesitates and is afraid of Homelander but is subordinate to him. Now that she is president, she will likely play a role in the finale.
- How does The Deep’s story end?
- The Deep is in a difficult situation after the end of The Seven and his banishment from the ocean, which will likely be addressed in the final episode.
- The conflict of Starlight
- Starlight already had a character arc in the 7th episode where she recognizes the importance of resistance and fighting against Homelander, which suggests that in Episode 8, the focus will be more on her and Hughie.
- Major deaths
- Major deaths will happen alongside the final episode, but there won’t be much time for mourning.
- What about Ryan and other missing characters?
- Although Ryan had appearances at the beginning of the season, he has been absent in the last episodes. However, it is now confirmed that Ryan will appear (Source: X.com). Stan Edgar is also a character who could appear again in the finale.
- What about the virus?
- For half the season, the focus was on the virus that can kill Supes. Thus, it could play a role as a weapon against other Supes besides Homelander, but it could also be ignored since it did not matter in the 7th episode.
- Butcher’s personal vendetta against Homelander
- It can be expected that Homelander and Butcher will face each other one last time. Whether there will be a big fight, however, is unclear; the last season has not shown any major battle scenes.
- What happens after the finale?
- An important part of the story is also how it continues after the finale. What happens if Homelander dies, and what role does Vought (and also Stan Edgar) play? A short epilogue will most likely take place. The future of Starlight and Hughie may also be shown.
It seems impossible
What does MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes say about the open storylines in the final episode? Series with multiple seasons and as many beloved characters as The Boys tend to open many storylines to give characters room to breathe. The problem, however, is that these storylines also need to be closed.
I doubt the series can satisfactorily tie up all these storylines, especially due to the running time. This will be especially problematic for characters like Ryan, Butcher, and Homelander. The web of the three is quite complex but has been left unresolved. With all the other storylines and characters, it seems quite unlikely there will be much room for that.
Additionally, the virus and Soldier Boy have not served the last season and the open storylines well. Much time has been dedicated to these aspects instead of giving characters a good conclusion earlier.
How the series deals with all the open storylines will ultimately be seen on May 20. One character has already met her end, but in the comics, she was very different and was a central element in the course of the series: Whoever knows Black Noir from The Boys only from the series underestimates him greatly
