Even before the release of the Steam Machine, there were rumors that there might be more behind the new device. For instance, some discussed on Reddit, that Valve could connect the purchase of a Steam Machine with an exclusive Half-Life 3.
Half-Life is Valve’s most significant franchise, even though Counter-Strike is now larger. However, Counter-Strike started as a mod for Half-Life and it was only through Half-Life that Steam was created. The (currently) latest second part of the official series was released in 2006 with a story continuation in 2007. After that, only the VR game Half-Life: Alyx was released in 2020, so fans have been waiting for Part 3 for quite a while.
Valve has now clarified that there will be no exclusive games for the Steam Machine and that they are currently not developing anything for the device. They see the Steam platform as a whole.

Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais stated to Bloomberg that they do not want to develop and release any exclusive games alongside the Steam Machine. It is not a good idea to dictate to players where they can play their games. He said:
I don’t think it’s a good model to dictate to players where they can play a game – at least not for us. We are much more interested in offering the entire PC catalog as our ‘exclusivity at launch’.
So you shouldn’t expect that an exclusive title will be released for the Steam Machine. There is no Fomo (Fear of missing out) if you can’t or don’t want to buy a Steam Machine because it is currently just too expensive for you.
The competition probably sees it differently: The major rival Epic, for example, relied for years on exclusive titles that could only be bought there to attract players away from Steam. Epic CEO Sweeney explained back then that they wanted to break Steam’s bad monopoly in the gaming sector, as this would force developers to give up 30% of their profits.
The Steam Controller currently has long delivery times. The Steam Machine, which is supposed to be released in 2026, is unlikely to be any different.
