Mimikyu in Pokémon GO has a special ability in battle. However, there is currently a problem.
Mimikyu is a Ghost and Fairy type Pokémon that was unexpectedly released in Pokémon GO on April 1st.
At the moment, you can catch it in the wild. Whether it will remain in the game after April 1st is uncertain – therefore, you should grab it quickly to be sure.
Especially since this Pokémon has a special ability that sets it apart from other Pokémon.
The unveiled form of Mimikyu – What is its use?
Mimikyu’s special ability lies in the rags it wears to conceal its appearance. In battle, this disguise absorbs a charge attack from your opponent. Thus, it basically acts like a third shield that Mimikyu can use. If it is hit by a charge attack, it switches to its unveiled form but takes no damage.
However, the free hit comes at a price: After switching to the unveiled form, Mimikyu takes increased damage. Accordingly, it will be defeated faster by fast and charge attacks after that. This should be taken into account.
Nevertheless: If the opponent uses a Pokémon with a charge attack that you prefer to tank, Mimikyu is a good option.
In PvP, you cannot currently use Mimikyu
What is the problem? As of now, Mimikyu cannot be used in PvP battles. You cannot send it against your friends or other trainers in the league to make use of its ability. It seems to be banned at the moment – whether and when this ban will be lifted is currently uncertain. We will keep you updated.
In Rocket battles, however, you can already use Mimikyu, so if you want to challenge Sierra, Arlo, Cliff, Giovanni or their grunts, you can send Mimikyu into battle.
Mimikyu’s Pokédex entry explains the form
To conclude, a bit of background: As you may have noticed, Mimikyu is closely connected to Pikachu. The Ghost-Fairy Pokémon is said to be so dreadful that one dies immediately upon seeing it. That is why it disguises itself with rags as Pikachu – to get closer to others and also receive a little love.
However, whoever damages its rags brings upon themselves Mimikyu’s eternal wrath. According to the Pokédex, it becomes sad when its costume is damaged. And it never forgets the attacker.
So consider whether you want to tangle with Mimikyu!
April 1st is fully dedicated to Mimikyu. Even during the spotlight hour in the evening, it will accompany Pikachu and will be catchable – so you can definitely catch it if you don’t find it beforehand. And what else is planned for April, we will show you here: All events in Pokémon GO in April 2026.
