But exactly this is changing nowadays: gaming performance no longer makes the huge leaps it did a few years or decades ago. And that has a significant advantage for us: we no longer have to constantly upgrade to stay ahead.
The additional performance from new hardware has been decreasing for many years
What is the reason for this? A few years ago, the focus for PC hardware was primarily on one thing: more and more performance. But these performance leaps are significantly decreasing now. The RTX 3080 was almost revolutionary at release, but the performance increases in the following models are increasingly diminishing. An RTX 5080 is hardly much faster than an RTX 4080 from the previous generation; a direct generational change is hardly worth it anymore.
A similar trend can also be observed with CPUs: processors have become so powerful that many gamers hardly notice any significant differences between consecutive upgrades.
Yes, in benchmarks, new products are still faster, better, and often more efficient, but often the improvements are only marginal, making it hardly worth investing a lot of money in a new CPU every year. While you used to have to upgrade or refresh every 2 years, most hardware today is already more than sufficient for 5 or 6 years.
A good example of this is also the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which was released in 2022 and which AMD is now bringing back to market. The 4-year-old CPU is still fast enough today and can power modern games without any issues. This does not make the Ryzen 7 5800X3D appear “outdated”. And the long-term support for the old socket AM4 also proves that old hardware does not have to become obsolete after just a few years.
Especially in light of the sharply increased prices for RAM and SSDs, this is a good sign for gamers that the race for ever newer and better hardware has significantly declined and that even with older hardware, you can still keep up.
