Alongside Rust and 7 Days To Die, DayZ is one of the most well-known and active games in the survival genre. After difficult phases, the future of the zombie shooter looks bright, thanks to strong player numbers and new expansions.

DayZ may be nearly six years old, but the survival shooter from Bohemia Interactive is currently celebrating a sort of second spring. Player numbers are rising, recent reviews are “Very Positive,” and on Twitch, more viewers are tuning in again when the game is streamed.
A few years ago, such a positive development seemed almost impossible. Parts of the community had nearly given up on DayZ. MyMMO reader Wieland sheds light on why the survival title is currently rising like a proverbial phoenix from the ashes.
Fresh wind and unique gaming experience
At its launch in December 2013, DayZ was something special among zombie survival games. On one hand, there were few online titles with this theme at the time; on the other hand, none possessed the scale and execution of DayZ.
At that time, essential resources were much rarer to find than today. To ensure a chance of survival, players had to form alliances with each other. However, this was not without danger, as players could only trust their fellow survivors to a limited extent due to the scarcity of resources.

Players who were incredibly lucky enough to find a weapon along with the appropriate equipment and ammunition had a significant advantage over other players. This situation could literally elevate the adrenaline and create a lot of tension.
This concept and the accompanying tension among players were very well received, allowing DayZ to have over 45,000 players simultaneously at release. This number could be maintained – with certain fluctuations – over the next three years.
DayZ experiences a long early access phase
Contrary to what is stated on the Steam page, DayZ was already available as an early access version in December 2013. Early access refers to games that are still in an early alpha state and may therefore have many bugs and issues.
The official release version of DayZ was only released in December 2018. Thus, five years of development time passed from the early access phase to the official release, during which a lot happened. However, this time was also marked by many errors and mishaps.
DayZ had enormous performance issues in early access. These were so severe that numerous YouTube channels designed their channel concepts around optimizing and improving the gaming experience.
The recommended adjustments were quite specific. Often players had to manually adjust the game’s configuration files. This was not only annoying but also a time-consuming process, as each configuration had to be tailored to individual hardware. And all this just to achieve 30 to 40 frames per second.
Confusing update philosophy
Besides many bugs, the developers urgently needed to improve performance. However, the update philosophy of Bohemia Interactive caused bad feelings within the community. The important patches always brought new content instead of fixing the foundation. The result was an increasingly poor gaming experience.
Instead of addressing the core issues of the game, Bohemia Interactive’s updates primarily did one thing: they added content that did not work properly and put the game into a worse state.
One of the larger updates introduced vehicles that did not work from start to finish. The controls felt bad, and the vehicles caused server-wide connection issues and client crashes.
Comparable problems occurred with other patches. When the survival mechanics were expanded to include diseases, these caused unnecessary character deaths for no apparent reason, leading to frustration. Documented performance and balancing improvements in the patch notes showed little effect.
High flying, low falling
In June 2016, Bohemia Interactive released a promising update for DayZ. This was desperately needed as player numbers were plummeting. Patch 0.60 introduced a new rendering engine that was supposed to graphically enhance the game and resolve many of the performance problems as well as bugs.
Unfortunately, the patch fell short of player expectations. Many of the long-standing bugs were not fully fixed or not addressed at all. The performance was improved, but the community had clearly expected much more.
As a result, the player numbers of DayZ continued to decline until only a few thousand players remained in 2017. Additionally, following Patch 0.60, there was another drought period where updates came even less frequently than in previous years.
Like a phoenix from the ashes
When one looks at the development of today’s gaming landscape, it was unimaginable for many players that DayZ could ever be completed. However, it turned out differently. The final release of DayZ was unexpectedly announced for December 2018.
The launch was somewhat rocky but managed to resolve many issues with the game. Bohemia Interactive continued to work on DayZ after that, to make the game more attractive to the general public and to win back the lost trust of the fans.
The fruits of these efforts: Player numbers have steadily grown since release. The current Steam Charts offer an optimistic outlook for the game, as DayZ achieved a peak of 73,418 simultaneous active players in January 2024. The 24-hour peak is nearly 50,000 players.
Moreover, the game now features an enormous mod support, leading to the emergence of numerous community branches like pure PvP servers or the popular role-playing servers.
DayZ as a positive example
Bohemia Interactive has shown with DayZ the consequences that can occur when a promising title is made worse by insufficient and slow updates, gradually eroding player trust.
However, Bohemia Interactive also demonstrates how things can go when one remains committed and systematically improves the gaming experience with the right updates and adjustments. Player trust is returning, and numbers are rising again.
The early access phase of DayZ was rocky and bleak. Now, the game receives regular updates as well as content patches. A major expansion has now even been announced for autumn 2024: In the survival shooter DayZ, you will soon conquer a dangerous snow landscape
