Destiny 2 has released its last episode, and although it’s time to go to the grave ship now, the experience is overshadowed by a legitimate question: Will Destiny 2 survive after Episode 3?
What is the current state of Destiny 2? Not so good, when disregarding the release of Episode 3. The loot shooter has notably lost many players, primarily due to its slow and repetitive content.
The episodes failed to impress and quickly lost their luster after release. During the weak months, the shooter managed to secure between 13,500 and 35,000 players on Steam, depending on the time (via steamcharts.com), but the remaining players also complained about the weaknesses of the episodes.
Events were reused, the narratives were weak, and the game fell further into a desolate state due to new patches, where bugs became the norm.
For many, it is clear: If things continue like this, there will soon be no more Destiny 2. Fortunately, however, Bungie still has a big project up its sleeve that aims to bring fans back, but will it be enough?
Frontiers only has one chance
Why is Frontiers so important? With the release of Episode: Betrayal, we now know that 5 months must pass before fans can try Bungie’s big project “Frontiers.” The team wants to take different paths to create a new experience for the community. A new saga is to be created.
The seasonal system is to be revised, new events are to take place, and also new formats like Metroidvanias, roguelikes, or survival shooters are to find their way into the game. Everything sounds promising, but due to numerous debacles, the fans have become skeptical – they have lost their trust.
Additionally, a large part of the team has either been laid off or moved to the new flagship project “Marathon”. Only a small portion of the workforce is working on Frontiers, and as the episodes were delivered, there is uncertainty about what to expect.
One thing is certain, however: the patience of the fans is running out. Even optimistic streamers like Aztecross or Datto are looking at a bleak future for Bungie, where it’s all or nothing. Frontiers must mark a new beginning by keeping players engaged with the game for years again.
If that doesn’t happen and this merely turns out to be Episodes 2.0, then Bungie could lose its sole source of revenue sooner or later, along with the funding for Marathon. What happens next then lies in Sony’s hands.
Could Frontiers save Destiny 2? Unfortunately, we cannot tell you. It definitely looks bleak. Bungie has, as insiders reported, overreached and tried to establish itself with many projects outside of Destiny 2 – those were then cancelled.
The only thing that remains is Destiny 2 and Marathon. We also hope that Destiny 2 experiences its second spring, but if the developers deliver the same as they did with their episodes, it looks bad.
