The developers of Path of Exile 2 have announced their fifth season, but the date comes as a surprise to fans.
What kind of announcement is this? The developers of Path of Exile follow a self-imposed cycle, with a new season in the game appearing every 4 months. Fans of Path of Exile 2 can therefore calculate when the next announcement of the new season will be.
This was not entirely unexpected. What they did not expect, however, is the start date: it will continue on May 29, 2026, with “Return to the Ancients” in the ARPG.

A date sets high expectations
Why is the date so special? The last season of Path of Exile 2 started in December, so fans were actually expecting an update in April.
Putting the new season in May means that the developers have made so many changes that the season simply had to start later. This is also fueled by the already months-long calls for a new endgame from the community.
So fans are dreaming in the YouTube comments and on Reddit of a fundamentally revised endgame and hopefully one or two new classes as well due to the late date.
What have the developers confirmed so far? While fans have many hopes because of the date, hardly anything has been confirmed so far. The trailer shows that the Ancients have returned, but what exactly this will mean in the game is completely unclear and will only be revealed on May 7 during the livestream.
However, on Reddit, developer Kelly made another comment and boosted fans’ hopes with the statement: “This expansion is shaping up to be one of the largest we have ever released; it just needs a bit more time to be completed! We have some plans for the time until the GGG Live on May 7 (PDT). Stay tuned, folks!”
The developers of Path of Exile 2 want to complete their game this year. No wonder that fans have high expectations with the date and especially after the developer’s statement. Whether these will actually be met will only become clear at the end of May.
