Pet Battle Dungeon brings new portal: Patch 8.2 brought the new Pet Battle Dungeon Stratholme. “Okay, we did [Borderlands] 1 and we did [Part] 2 fairly quickly afterward. I was involved in both games and we were tired. After the launch of Diablo 3, there were major issues with the real-money auction house. The game still suffers from some of these problems today. Former Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime explains in hindsight what went wrong back then and how it was changed.
Who is speaking? Mike Morhaime is one of the three original founders of Blizzard and worked at the company for 27 years, most of the time as CEO.
He has now stepped back from Blizzard and reflects in an interview with Venturebeat on some significant experiences from his time there. For instance, about the “real-money auction house” in Diablo 3.
What was the real-money auction house? Diablo 3 launched with an auction house in two versions:
In one version of the auction house, players traded with gold and items
In the other version, they sold items for real money: players could buy with their “Battle.net” funds or pay with services like PayPal. This auction house opened about a month after launch on PC.
The auction house was closed in March 2014, shortly before the expansion “Reaper of Souls” was released.
A player allegedly earned $10,000 with the auction house in Diablo 3, as Polygon reported in 2012.
“Players do it anyway”
Why did Blizzard even introduce the auction house? According to Morhaime, it was a logical development from Diablo 2. Because in Diablo 2, a real-money market for items had emerged, but it did not come from Blizzard, but from others.
Blizzard thought: If we don’t introduce an official mechanism here, a lot of bad things will happen in Diablo 3 that steal from the players: people can steal items or steal passwords.
Morhaime says: People set up businesses for item trading, and some of them only wanted to steal people’s credit cards.
At Blizzard, they knew this and asked: “Okay, people do it anyway. Can’t we give them a way to trade items safely?”

The problem was: This idea apparently came to Blizzard too late. Because the loot system of Diablo 3 was designed without the real-money auction house in mind. They quickly noticed that the system did not work:
Strong players sold their “second-best” sword, which they didn’t need anyway, for a pittance
Weak players saw this sword in the auction house, which was much better than anything they had, and bought it to save themselves hours of grinding
When you looked in the auction house, there were always items that were better than what you found in the game. This ruined the “item reward loop”.
Morhaime did not refer to the mechanic as “Pay2Win”, but as “Pay2NoFun”.
It was like this to abolish the auction house: Morhaime says it wasn’t a big issue. They asked the team: “Would it make Diablo 3 better if we removed the auction house?” The team replied, “Yes.”
“If you could do whatever you wanted, would you snap your fingers and remove the auction house?” The team said, “Yes, we would.” So it was removed.
Were there financial problems? Here Morhaime says he does not believe so. There might not be a table to show the CFO that this was the right action. But it was the right action, and every player knows that.
Diablo 3 and the little content
What impact did the end of the auction house have? Morhaime does not talk about this in the current interview.
But it seems to be a problem that Diablo 3 had no way to make money apart from selling the game and the expansions.
Therefore, Diablo 3 has no real live support, as many Diablo fans would have wished, with more expansions and regular major patches.
As early as 2015, Morhaime explained that the Diablo team had discussed monetization after “Reaper of Souls” in 2015, and Morhaime said: “Just release the stuff for free.”
He wanted to win back the hearts and minds of players who were disappointed by the release.
Valuable lesson for other loot-shooters
What this is about: Diablo 3 had a terrible launch back then – also because of the real-money auction house.
Because of ideas like “free item trading”, the loot genre has moved away from the experiment by Blizzard back then. Today, loot in many games is “bound on pick up” and cannot be traded.
This lesson was learned by Blizzard from Diablo 3, and many loot games like Destiny or The Division have followed this idea: trading items kills the “reward loop” because it no longer depends on your own success.
A valuable lesson for the genre. Diablo 3 has certainly lost some content over the last 5 years due to the lack of a “good monetization” method.

The new areas of World of Warcraft are top-notch. But one problem is massively disrupting the experience, and it’s becoming clearer than ever before.
If you look at the reactions to the new content in World of Warcraft, most fans seem quite satisfied. Nazjatar and Mechagon offer a lot of content, small and large objectives for everyone, and numerous secrets. However, Nazjatar, in particular, is struggling with a major problem that is ruining the day for many players: sharding and phasing.
PvP event virtually impossible: Those in war mode in Nazjatar can participate in a simple PvP event every 3 hours. It’s all about holding control points against the other faction. It would be fun if there were a somewhat equal distribution of players. However, this is not the case on most shards. One faction dominates, and since you can reasonably foresee who will win early on, players simply use the group finder to switch to another shard.
This results in an imbalance on some shards with an excess of Alliance players and on others with an excess of Horde players. Proper PvP rarely occurs. One side dominates, captures all points, and only faces resistance in the first two minutes. After that, the remaining enemies have switched to shards where they are in the majority.
Especially absurd: On some shards, players cannot even achieve a single kill within the 30 minutes required to become “qualified” for rewards.
Rare mobs are another problem: This is particularly frustrating for players waiting for rare opponents, such as Fabious. This creature only appears every 2-8 hours and stays for 2 minutes. Because it can drop a great mount, some players wait the entire duration for the spawn. But what good is that if, after a 5-hour wait, you are suddenly transferred to another shard where Fabious may have been active just 10 minutes ago?
This leads to frustration and confusion since players cannot actively influence their own “sharding,” unless they join a group. It is unclear when exactly the game decides to move players.
Whether Blizzard has a solution for this problem remains to be seen. It is certainly a shame that such good content is marred by these issues.

Ascendant realm on the Leviathan
The story is supposed to continue the narrative surrounding the Dreaming City – similar to how the Whisper mission expanded the story of the Warmind DLC.
The mission has similar traits to previous secret dungeon missions such as The Zero Hour or The Whisper, but this time there is no timer.
Instead, there are supposedly more challenging mechanics – comparable to the Broken Throne. However, the mission itself will not be referred to as a dungeon.
He recently shared on Twitter that he has extracted new data about Bad Juju. Some of this might change when the weapon actually appears.
He has summarized his findings in this graphic:

By the way, some time ago, an in-game icon for an exotic masterwork catalyst was found in the data, unmistakably showing Bad Juju.
What does Bungie say? Bungie has not commented on either the leak or Ginsor’s data so far and probably won’t do so. Players are left with no choice but to wait for now.
Many suspect that the mission for Bad Juju will go live unannounced, just like with Whisper or the Perfected Outbreak. So, an early presentation of the weapon, for example, in the weekly “This Week at Bungie” blog is not to be expected.
What is actually with Hawkmoon? Many Guardians actually expected another hand cannon as a returnee this season. Through a statement from the famous leaker AnonTheNine, some fans actually expected Hawkmoon.
Because Anon said that in Season 7, alongside the Rose, another bird comes back that we all love. Many took that as a clear hint at Hawkmoon.
But lately, fans believe it could also be the legendary hand cannon Falkner that came back with Season 7 and reminds of the Eyasluna from Destiny 1.
So, it could be that some fans are hoping in vain for Hawkmoon. However, the return is still not ruled out. After all, this is all pure speculation. Throughout the season of opulence, we are likely to become wiser over time.
Mordhau is now known for players finding truly crazy ways to eliminate their opponents. However, there are some weapons that are not so easy to find and that can really humiliate your opponents when you kill them with them.
What are these weapons? Mordhau has been noted early on for absurd weapons. MeinMMO presents four weapons from Mordhau that you cannot easily choose for your character. Most of them can only be found right in the middle of the battle, some only after a while or hidden on the field and on certain maps.
The special thing about the weapons is that while they are actually completely absurd, they can deal a lot of damage. When you face an opponent with one of them, they won’t expect to be killed by something so ridiculous.
What kind of weapon is this? One of the more well-known weapons in Mordhau is the frying pan. It is nothing more than exactly that: a cooking utensil made of cast iron that can deal surprisingly well. It is also relatively easy to obtain. However, it comes with a significant drawback and is more suited for pure fun games or very experienced players.
How do I get the frying pan? To equip a frying pan, you need to select the “Farmer” perk in the Mercenary editor. It costs 8 points and prohibits you from selecting most weapons that you need for better builds. In return, you also gain access to new things – like the frying pan or pitchforks and other tools.
Absurd Weapon #2:
The Carrot
What kind of weapon is this? The carrot was introduced with the Patch 7 from June 8, 2019. It is essentially a carving knife with a different appearance, but otherwise has the same functions. It does relatively little damage, but is quite fast and can be used by any mercenary. However, it is not in the selection menu but must be found.
Where do I get the carrot? Carrots are an Easter egg on the Crossroads map, similar to TotalBiscuit’s Grave. They can be found in several places here. Near the map’s center is a small cluster of trees where you can find and pick up the carrot directly. Also, in other areas outside of the map, carrots are simply stuck in the ground. What kind of weapon is this? No joke: In Mordhau, you can throw feces. However, not your own. The small dung balls are thrown weapons, similar to stones and deal significant damage to opponents – aside from the horror they experience when they meet their end through feces.
How do I get the dung? Most people should know dung from the horde mode, where the enemies particularly cover players with it. However, it also exists in other modes – basically in any mode where horses are present. Because horses excrete dung after a while. You can then collect it from under them and throw it. What kind of weapon is this? Strictly speaking, icicles are not a weapon, but an environmental effect. Since the rather poor launch, the developers at DICE have been steadily working to expand Battlefield 5 . A lot has improved, a lot has been added. But fans are still not really happy. They expect a lot from the upcoming fall.
The expectations for the current Battlefield 5 installment were high – both from fans and the publisher EA. Visually, the game looked great, and the absence of a premium model brought much joy to the fans. Finally, all additional content was free for all players. But what was the mood at launch?
How Battlefield 5 started
That’s why many were disappointed by the launch: The launch of Battlefield 5 in November 2018 didn’t go very well. Some problems became apparent even beforehand. Development apparently couldn’t keep up, and the release was postponed. Nevertheless, many fans saw the game as unfinished at launch. Several promised features that were supposed to be there at launch were missing or delayed.
Overall, many considered the launch’s scope to be meager, and many missed iconic maps or locations. Fans were worried about an impending content drought. At that time, DICE reassured players to “chill”, but this problem has not been fully addressed until today.
This is how many copies Battlefield 5 has sold: Despite the relatively poor start and fan criticism, Battlefield 5 has sold quite well.
In February 2019, EA reported that they had sold approximately 7.3 million copies of Battlefield 5 within about two months after launch. These features are now in Battlefield 5: Since launch, the developers have continuously worked to expand Battlefield 5.
Further content chapters have been released through the free Tides-of-War service. New maps, modes, weapons, vehicles, cosmetics, and more have been added since launch.
How is Battlefield 5 doing at the moment? Currently, the 4th chapter “Against All Odds” is live. And this seems to be further uplifting the mood in the community. By the end of May, the new map Mercury already excited many players. Many fans’ moods had noticeably improved.
And the 4 new maps, which will be gradually released during chapter 4, are also being very well received by fans. The corresponding trailer was flooded with praise and positive comments. Many players are particularly looking forward to the upcoming reboot of the classic Metro. Compared to the launch and the first months in 2019, the mood among fans has improved at least somewhat.
In short: Battlefield 5 seems to be doing better compared to the launch phase. A lot has happened, new content has been added, and many aspects have resonated well with fans. But many are still not really happy. But why?
This is causing frustration among fans: What has continued to cause frustration since launch are occasional microtransactions, some bugs, and especially the flow of content.
Because although the content at launch was really meager and many things were missing, DICE has not delivered new content fast enough and sufficiently in the eyes of many players against their promises.
Many criticize that the new content is mostly good, but it takes far too long to arrive. Also, it is simply too little to keep players entertained in the long run. Some even claim that with the premium model, the flow of content was much better. They would even be willing to pay for that again now if they still had the choice.
Some of the biggest wishes currently include more maps, more factions, and iconic scenarios like in the Pacific. And this might soon actually come true.
Therefore, many are eagerly awaiting fall for Battlefield 5
This gives fans hope: Although not everyone is currently happy, many Battlefield fans have high hopes for the fall. Because in chapter 5, expected in the fall, they apparently deliver exactly what many fans desire:

Furthermore, DICE will fulfill another major wish for many fans in late summer or fall. Finally, private servers in the form of Private Games are expected to come to Battlefield 5.
After Battlefield 5 had to do without this for a long time and it was unclear for a long time whether the popular and requested RSP program (Rented Server Program) would even come, DICE announced some time ago that it will officially return soon in an improved form.
Quo vadis, Battlefield? It will be interesting to see whether Battlefield 5 can convince fans with its future content deliveries. Currently, it seems that a comeback could actually succeed in the fall of 2019, provided DICE delivers what they promised without delays or significant bugs.
