What is the article about? On June 27, 2019, Teamfight Tactics was released, and the game is particularly aimed at fans of tactical games. While luck plays a part, your own skill is crucial.
That’s why we want to share tips and tricks with you that can increase your chances of winning. If you are unfamiliar with Teamfight Tactics, you can find a beginner’s guide to “Teamfight Tactics” here, though it’s from June 2019.
The choice of items can decide victory or defeat
The right item in the hands of the right champion can decide a game single-handedly. A Syndra with Rabadon’s Deathcap can take out an opponent with one ability or take down Mech-Pilots who rely on certain defensive items since their damage is already sufficient.
Getting to know the items in Teamfight Tactics: It’s extremely important to know the items and to understand which champion to assign which item.

In general:
- Attack speed and attack damage are important for classes that deal damage through their attacks, such as ranged fighters or assassins.
- Mages love AP damage or mana items and appreciate Rabadon’s Deathcap.
- Tanks love defensive items like Warmog’s Armor or Guardian Angel.
Using Spatula to give champions new origins: An important aspect is the item Spatula. Depending on the combination, this can grant your champions an additional origin.
This way, you can create new synergies and optimally strengthen your team.
Choosing items in the carousel as well: Especially in the carousel, it can be important to look not only for the champion but especially for the item.
You might sell the champion and then use the gained item to improve your champions. This is especially true for the starting round.
Positioning champions correctly
The right position plays an important role for your champions. Although the fight runs automatically, you still have a direct influence on the outcome.
Melee fighters to the front: Generally, melee fighters should move to the front because they need to run to their opponent. Offensive melee fighters should, however, be positioned slightly behind the tanks so that they can absorb the initial damage.
Countering infiltrators: If you are playing against opponents that use many infiltrators, it can be wise to place a tank in the back rows to divert the damage from your carries, as those jump to the last row.
Keeping an eye on neutral rounds: There are also strategies against neutral opponents if you want to win more easily. Against the Krugs in Stage 2-7, it’s best to position your champions far to the right so they only focus on one opponent.
For the Murk Wolves in Stage 3-7, you must anticipate that they will attack your most distant units and adjust accordingly.
Your level plays an important role in the rarity of champions
Most of you will know that the chance of rare champions increases with your player level. However, few take full advantage of this knowledge.
Early pushing of 1 Gold champions to T2 and T3: The best time to push your 1-gold champions is just before your player reaches level 4 or at the latest level 5.
By then, enough time has passed to re-roll aggressive champions and still have accumulated gold. Moreover, you will already have an idea of which direction to go.
Finding a 1 gold champion at high level and managing to push it to level 3 is, however, very difficult.
The gold management
Effective use of gold is also crucial for success in Teamfight Tactics. You receive:
- 5 gold as a base every round
- 1 gold for a victory
- Additional gold for winning and losing streaks
- 1 gold per 10 gold as interest (maximum 5 gold)
Gold, in turn, can be spent on champions, for more XP, and for re-rolling champions. And that’s where the key point lies.
When should I re-roll? Generally, it is wise to wait until 50 gold, to take an additional 5 gold each round and then spend all gold above 50. However, sometimes you can also earn gold in different ways.
If you’ve had a winning streak for several rounds and are already gaining extra gold from that, it may be wise to invest to continue winning. Many stay too greedy at the top and lose their lead to the rest of the field.
Here, individual situations, the meta, and your own experience play an important role.
Always keep an eye on the opponent
Almost as important as your board are the boards of your opponents. Especially in the late game, you should keep a constant eye on them.
Why should I gather information about the opponent? Information about the opponents’ units has several advantages. On the one hand, you know what your opponents are using against you and where these units are standing.
This way, you can think of your own units and formations to counter the opponent’s strategy.
On the other hand, you also know how many champions are still in the pool. If three other players are already going for Mech-Pilots, then you might want to change your strategy and rather collect different units instead of hoping for one of the few mechs.
Conversely, you can also intentionally take champions out of the pool from your opponent, preventing them from leveling up their units.
Teamfight Tactics always involves luck and chance
Even though skill can often make up for many things in Teamfight Tactics, luck also plays a decisive role in the end. What and how many items you receive is as random as the champions offered.
Don’t be too frustrated if a round doesn’t go as planned. With the next one, it can look different again.
