World of Warcraft is more than just a game – It is a piece of home

World of Warcraft is more than just a game for many gamers. Azeroth has long become a piece of home – even for MeinMMO demon Cortyn.

Video games have a great influence on our daily lives – no gamer would deny that. After all, they are our favorite hobby. And the games are often the biggest time wasters beside work, the thing we spend most of our waking lives on.

But only a few games have had such a great impact on me as World of Warcraft did. It is time for a tribute to the game that has moved me more than any other game before it.

Note: The article originally dates back to 2017. We have updated it for Easter 2023.

A world known inside and out

If someone were to drag me out of bed at 4:00 AM, I could explain exactly how to navigate through the Blackrock Depths to reach the final boss as if it were second nature. I could still explain how to complete a tribute run in Stratholme and still know exactly which tent in Thunder Bluff to find the vendors I am looking for.

World of Warcraft Cataclysm

However, if someone were to ask me how exactly to get to the nearest savings bank, I would have to think for at least a moment about the directions.

I believe this is exactly why “Cataclysm” was a problem for many long-time players. The overhaul of the old world did WoW good and made the zones more sensible and exciting. But it was indeed a piece of home that was changed. People no longer knew exactly where everything was, and a few cherished memories began to fade.

It’s a bit like the old kitchen where you used to munch on your mother’s delicious pancakes after school for years. When the money was finally enough for a new kitchen, the pancakes were still just as delicious. But somehow the old flair was missing. And that the cutlery now lies in the second drawer from the left instead of the first, one will never really get used to.

WoW players: Loyal, foolish, and blind to mistakes?

Time and again, you hear that fans forgive too much after so many years of WoW. Some players are only still attached to WoW because they have gotten used to it. And to a certain extent, that is true.

WoW Draenei Embracing the Fel

However, that does not mean one loses sight of the mistakes. Because I know WoW so well, annoying bugs immediately stand out to me that I would not notice in other games.

One example? The face tentacles of female Draenei characters clipped into their bodies during a patch. I could be annoyed all day about how Blizzard could overlook such a bug. When I look at my character and see that the tentacles are now fused into the shoulder instead of resting lightly on the collarbone or swinging back and forth slightly while moving, it makes me sad. It’s such a small detail, and yet it suddenly wasn’t “my” Draenei anymore.

Yet, it is exactly this feeling that WoW still evokes after more than a decade that makes WoW special.

I can still get caught up in a hype when a new expansion is announced. And I can still grind my teeth when some feature has been cut or a mechanic is no fun.

The second home, Azeroth

No other game manages to pull me back in time and again. Then I return and sink into the world for a while even after not playing for half a year.

WoW Draenei Drawing Power
No other game manages to pull Cortyn in so often.

The 24-hour sessions in role-playing games, the great successes as a 40-person raid, the laughter on TeamSpeak when someone gets killed by the elevator boss again. All these memories stand on equal footing with “real” experiences, as they also came about with other people.

After all the time I have spent in World of Warcraft, and with all the friendships that developed over well over a decade first in WoW and then in the “real world,” I can only come to one conclusion: Azeroth has become a “second home” for me – one that is always accessible, even when the address in the real world changes.

All of this makes WoW more than just a game for me.

Have you also built such a bond with WoW or another game? Or are all games just a temporary diversion for you, in which you don’t really want to lose yourself?

Teacher streams lessons on Twitch, now has hundreds of viewers: “Was only intended for my students at first”

Teacher Mr. Gerold has been looking for new ways to reach his students and impart knowledge to them. He found them on platforms usually known for gaming: Twitch and YouTube.

The Corona pandemic and the associated lockdowns have moved many professions to home office in order to reduce the risk of infection. This also included teachers, who held their lessons via Zoom or similar services.

One of these teachers was Alex Gerold from Cologne, who took a step further. To accommodate his students, he began uploading videos of his lessons to YouTube and also streaming on Twitch.

We talked to “Mr. Gerold” in an interview about his streams.

The article originally appeared in May 2022 on MeinMMO.

“At the beginning, the videos were only intended for my students…”

MeinMMO: Hello! Please introduce yourself to our readers. Who are you? What do you do for a living and in your free time?

Alex: Hey, my name is Alex Gerold, I am a vocational school teacher and IHK examiner from Cologne. I mainly teach in the training occupation of office management clerk. When I’m not at school, I do a lot of sports, meet friends, or cheer for FC Cologne in the stadium.

MeinMMO: You run Twitch and YouTube channels on your teaching topic. How did you come up with the idea to specifically start streaming?

Alex: Many teachers switched to tools like Zoom during the pandemic period. During the Corona pandemic, we conducted online classes with Microsoft Teams. That worked great, but I wanted to give my students the opportunity to access the learning content at any time, independent of class time.

That’s when I quickly thought of YouTube, and “Mr. Gerold” was born. At first, the videos were actually only intended for my students, but as it often goes (laughs).

By now, the videos have 2.5 million views. The idea of Twitch came to me accidentally while channel surfing on YouTube. I saw that many YouTubers like Montanablack upload their live streams from Twitch to YouTube. That’s how I got into Twitch and thought that this platform is perfect for providing live tutoring to a wide audience.

On Alex’s YouTube channel, you can find both short explanatory videos and proper exam simulations.

MeinMMO: You started with relatively short explanatory videos on various questions. What kinds of formats have you tried since then?

Alex: At the beginning, I made many short videos with a maximum runtime of 10 minutes. Sometimes that’s not so easy and certain things can’t be explained or related in such a short time.

That’s why I also created some longer videos that worked surprisingly well. It’s important that you don’t make the videos boring, but use practical examples and explain things as simply as possible.

Once, I made a quiz series. I was out in the woods on a treasure hunt, and the viewers had to help me solve various puzzles with lesson questions. I had a great time, but the videos weren’t clicked as often (laughs).

“It’s unusual at first to stream on Twitch in front of 200-300 viewers”

MeinMMO: How does feedback from your viewers influence the content on your channel? Can they suggest a video on a specific topic, for example?

Alex: I regularly conduct surveys on YouTube, Twitch, or Instagram. You can already tell that certain topics come up frequently. These include accounting or booking entries. The response is also greater for these topics. I generally have close contact with my community and try to answer all messages as best as I can.

MeinMMO: How does teaching and tutoring via YouTube and Twitch differ from regular frontal teaching via Zoom from your experience?

Alex: It’s unusual at first to stream on Twitch in front of 200-300 viewers you don’t know while teaching only your class on Teams. But surprisingly, you get used to it quickly, and the same people keep popping up in the chat, so a sense of group forms quickly.

Of course, normal online lessons with the class are different and more intimate just because of the microphone function, but the fun factor on Twitch is quite high with the chat function and various tools like giveaways or quizzes.

On Twitch, Alex mainly streams in the categories Education, Outdoors, and Just Chatting. By the way, the next stream is on Sunday.

MeinMMO: What advantages and disadvantages do you see with Twitch and YouTube for your work?

Alex: I believe the biggest advantage is the recognition and popularity of the platforms among young people. It gives me great pleasure to do something meaningful, and I am thrilled with all the positive messages that I receive daily.

At the same time, however, the pressure also increases to meet the demands and expectations of the viewers. Many forget that this is my hobby and I am not a full-time streamer or YouTuber. I am still a passionate teacher in the classroom.

Teaching channels don’t get enough attention

MeinMMO: What difficulties do teaching channels face?

Alex: The loyalty of the viewers understandably only lasts as long as the education lasts. Why should you rewatch the learning videos afterwards?

Furthermore, there is unfortunately not much media and political attention for teaching channels. Totally undeserved. YouTubers like Lehrer Schmidt or Daniel Jung have saved the behinds of a whole generation of students.

Social media is also always entertainment. We live in a consumer society where everything has to be fast and entertaining. This is difficult for teaching channels (Mr. Lawyer does it very well).

“Lehrer Schmidt” (1.37 million subscribers) and “Mathe by Daniel Jung” (852,000 subscribers) are teaching channels on YouTube that publish tutorial videos on topics from mathematics. The videos are often short, concise explanations of individual questions within various mathematical areas such as geometry, calculus, etc.

MeinMMO: Your channels originated in connection with the Corona pandemic. How do you see your future now that restrictions have been lifted?

Alex: Corona was definitely a boost for the videos, but I still believe in the concept.

I recently started a podcast. I’m also experimenting with TikTok. Dance videos with my students, for example, cringe (laughs).

I don’t have concrete plans. I will keep going as long as I have fun with it. Right now, I’m having a lot of fun, and the positive feedback motivates me to keep going.

MeinMMO: What tips would you give to teachers who want to connect more with their students?

Alex: Just do it! And above all: Use the platforms that the students know. Exchange ideas with your students and ask them for their opinions and wishes. That’s the beauty of the teaching profession: You are very close to your target group.

We sincerely thank Alex for the interview and wish him continued fun and success with his activities on Twitch and YouTube.

I got into a sex limousine in GTA Online and flew over Los Santos

In GTA Online, I experienced what is probably the craziest session I have ever encountered, thanks to a modder. And I have seen a lot.

What happened? I regularly log into GTA Online, spin the lucky wheel, and complete my daily tasks. It often happens that modders use their cheat menus to influence the experience of other lobby participants. This can be negative, causing a complete blackout for all players where they can only see black.

Often, you also encounter god mode hackers who cannot be killed. Well, almost.

However, I got lucky during my session. A modder was with me and many other players in the lobby. He wanted everyone to have fun. And before I knew it, I was already in a sex limousine flying over the vast online world of Los Santos.

This article was originally published in July 2020 and has been updated for you in April 2023.

My Adventure with Limos, Transformers, and the Driving Hamburger

It all started like this: In the online lobby chat, a message from a player popped up that sounded something like “WOAH, what is THAT?” Followed by numerous smileys expressing his joy. Curious as I am, I immediately jumped into my car and searched for the player on the map. I didn’t have to search long before the guy overtook me in a hamburger.

No, not a person from Hamburg. Yes, the food. No, he didn’t hold it in his hand. HE WAS DRIVING A HAMBURGER!

GTA Online Hamburger Car
A modder applied this hamburger skin to a tank vehicle. It looks like a royal cheeseburger is speeding down the streets – rolling on two buns

I couldn’t miss the opportunity and then also got into the burger vehicle and cruised through the streets. You wouldn’t believe how fast such a meatball bun can become.

As I finished my joyride, a player messaged me in the chat. He said I should stand still.

Normally, I should have been suspicious at this point and immediately switched to passive mode. But after my culinary adventure, I felt so exhilarated that I just waited. Just five seconds later, a sex limousine teleported next to me.

I quickly recognized that it had to be a sexualized version of this multi-person vehicle. On the roof, there was a giant pole with a whopping eighteen times the “69” attached. A clear reference to the sexual position that has become a popular meme on the internet.

GTA Online Sex Limo
Huup Huup – Your taxi is here

As a good citizen of Los Santos, I, of course, immediately got in. Instead of speeding down the streets with that oversized pole on the roof, the limo took off. Together with another player, the modder and I then flew in this sex limo over Los Santos.

Because we apparently weren’t attracting enough attention from the other players, the modder then activated a bright color change. Now we were flying with an RGB sex limo over the city, stopping next to astonished players. Honestly? I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face.

The grand finale of this fun afternoon took place at the Los Santos airport. Here, the modder spawned a huge transformer, built from tanks and a jet. A giant, sad face hovered over the body. The “device” was incredibly fast, zooming from one side to the other across the runway. Followed by a horde of police cars trying in vain to stop this gigantic transformer with their puny machine guns.

It went on like this for about twenty minutes, with more crazy vehicles being spawned by the modder from his menu in between.

Conclusion: Sometimes Modders are Nice Too

Here’s what I learned: Up until now, my experiences with modders in GTA Online have been negative. I have over 1800 gameplay hours in GTA Online and have encountered quite a few hackers/modders over the last few years. So far, this afternoon was the best encounter with these players.

I would gladly encounter them again at the next event in the online world. Rockstar recently announced that GTA Online will soon receive its biggest update ever. And I’m really looking forward to it.

Diablo 4: The best builds for each class with specialization and gameplay

Diablo 4 has successfully completed its Open Beta, and MeinMMO has taken an overview of which builds are on top after the big test.

Update from April 8th: We have adjusted the article, incorporating and updating Necro gameplay.

What will I find here? We present the best builds for each class that we have been able to test or confirm so far. Currently, only builds for level 25 are included, the max level for the recent Open Beta of Diablo 4.

For each build, you will find a short description of how the class plays, as well as a gameplay video to give you an impression of the playstyle. Talents, abilities, and legendaries in detail can be found in the linked guide.

The list will be expanded over time as we find more builds to present. If you are still unsure what you want to play, here is an overview of which class suits you best.

[toc]

The best builds for the Barbarian

Bleeding Barbarian with self-healing

As a Barbarian, you rely on using different weapons. The bleeding build from MeinMMO editor Maik Schneider focuses on inflicting enemies with many stacks of the bleeding debuff.

You mow through a horde of enemies and let them bleed out slowly. For many enemies, it is enough just to wait and move on. You also heal yourself robustly in the process.

By the way: This is how you change weapons as a Barbarian. You can see what the build looks like here:

Diablo 4: Beta gameplay – Barbarian

The best builds for the Druid

Werewolf Druid leading his own pack

As a Werewolf Druid, you command 3 additional werewolves and strengthen them with your abilities. With your buffs, you improve the wolves, poison enemies, and tear them apart as a pack.

The biggest advantages are that you continually heal yourself in the process and can hardly die, while also serving as a support for other players. You are well placed, especially in groups.

A major problem is that Druids are generally considered weak, but the build makes them quite playable. You can see the gameplay here:

Diablo 4: Gameplay of the Werewolf Druid against World Boss Ashava

The best builds for the Huntress

Melee Huntress as an assassin

The Huntress is actually popular as a ranged fighter, but I had much more fun as a melee rogue during the test. The build fights with whirling blades and a lot of agility.

You dance around groups of enemies, dodging all attacks and eliminating opponents with flying knives and shadow magic. Your greatest strength is the mobility with which you fly across the battlefield.

The build does have some problems with bosses, but I was able to kill the world boss Ashava with it without dying:

Diablo 4 features huge bosses like an MMO – And they drop really good loot

The best builds for the Necromancer

1-button Necromancer with blood mist

Necromancers often play with skeletons as servants. However, the blood mist build only uses one ability to wipe out entire hordes of enemies, and companions are more of a nice addition.

While you do not have to do much to succeed with the build, you do need a specific legendary; without it, the build simply does not work. However, you can keep yourself alive against any enemy with it.

Here you will find classic Necro gameplay with skeletons and corpse explosions. Here is what the build looks like without the special legendary:

Diablo 4: Beta Gameplay – Necromancer

The best builds for the Sorceress

Frost Sorceress that kills everything in seconds

The Frost Sorceress uses ice spikes to shred enemies. It utilizes the ability not just for itself but especially its passive effect through the special class mechanic of the Sorceress.

When you use other cooldowns, you summon more ice spikes on nearby enemies. This way, you can kill just about anything in seconds.

We unfortunately do not have our own gameplay for the build yet, but you can find the build in action from YouTuber positron1223 here:

Lightning Sorceress for bosses and leveling

The Lightning Sorceress is weaker against large masses of enemies but can effectively combat smaller groups and single targets. Additionally, no enemy can ever get too close to you thanks to the crackling sparks.

The big advantage is that you rarely have to stand still. You are constantly on the move, gathering sparks while your lightning spells chase and kill enemies. Furthermore, you hardly need legendaries for the build to work.

Do you have a favorite build? Feel free to leave us a comment on how you like to play your class.

Space battle in EVE Online destroys thousands of euros – 13 hours of fighting between 6,000 ships

In a space battle of the MMORPG EVE Online, 6,000 players fought and destroyed in-game resources worth several thousand euros.

What is EVE Online? EVE Online is a subscription-based sci-fi MMORPG from Pearl Abyss (formerly CCP Games), where all players play on the same server and inhabit space with numerous planetary systems.

There is no clearly defined game objective in EVE Online. Primarily, players pursue the development of their character and the accumulation of personal in-game wealth. Accordingly, there is a strong focus on the game’s market system and economic activities.

EVE Online: Der Staat der Caldari im Trailer

What kind of battle was that? In EVE Online, there are always massive space battles where thousands of players meet. In recent events, the “Imperium” fought alongside the troops of “B2” against “Fraternity”, “PanFam”, and “Winter Coalition” in the X47L-Q system.

In the total of 13 hours of fighting, approximately 6,000 players were involved. Additionally, in-game resources worth one trillion ISK (the in-game currency of EVE) were destroyed.

If EVE players want to buy the in-game currency outside the game, they currently pay around €40 for seven billion ISK (via playerauctions.com). Based on the in-game resources destroyed during the battle worth one trillion ISK, players would need to invest nearly €5,500 to compensate for the damages.

Massive battles are, however, not unusual in EVE Online. Just a few weeks ago, 6,000 players fought in EVE Online in the “X47L-Q” system. The largest battle of the MMORPG remains unmatched. In 2020, around 8,000 players were involved in a fight.

The developers of EVE Online have announced a new AAA game. However, this was not well received by the players of the MMORPG, as it is said to use a controversial technology.

This addon drastically changes how you perceive World of Warcraft

A new addon revolutionizes questing in World of Warcraft. All quests now have voice output – and it sounds really good.

World of Warcraft has aged a bit by now. Even though there are continuous updates, some content is still a bit outdated in its structure.

A major criticism is that quests are not voiced. Most quests still present their content in an outdated way: A text window opens with a few sentences of text. Many veterans no longer read the texts, and even newcomers often just click quickly through and run to the blue marked spot on the map.

This leads to a lot of the storyline of the game world of Azeroth being lost, which is not surprising, as it is not presented in a modern way.

An addon now provides relief here, at least in WoW Classic and Wrath of the Lich King Classic.

What kind of addon is this? The addon “VoiceOver” is currently only available for the two classic variants of Classic, but it is extremely impressive. All NPC quest texts have been voiced by AI.

This is not a “simple” text-to-voice that sounds mechanical and extremely artificial, but significantly higher quality. Dwarves sound like dwarves, night elves and undead have a slight, mystical echo in their voices and there is a distinction made between male and female quest givers.

Where can you download the addon? If you want to try the addon “VoiceOver” yourself in Classic, you can download VoiceOver on Curse. However, at 1 GB for an addon, it is quite large – this is purely due to the amount of data it requires. After all, sound files for hundreds of quests and NPC dialogues are included.

How this looks in practice is demonstrated by the YouTuber Frostadamus:

Recommended editorial content

How good is the addon? There are minor errors. Sometimes NPCs pronounce punctuation, like “Dot Dot Dot” when “…” appears in the text. Also, when the character’s name appears in the quest text, the voice simply says a generic “Person”, for example, “Hey, Person, can’t you help me today?”

But those are isolated cases and the majority of quests are drastically enhanced because of it. Even with these small errors, the quests are presented in a much more interesting and engaging way.

What does Blizzard say about it? So far, nothing. However, some veterans may remember that Blizzard had previously shelved a similar project. At that time, some fans took it upon themselves to voice all quests in the game. Blizzard prohibited this because they did not want others to create story content for WoW – and voicing quests fell under that.

In the case of the “VoiceOver” addon, the cat is now out of the bag and shows how well this works with AI voices and what added value it can bring to the game world and the story.

Many would likely pay more attention to quest texts that they would otherwise completely skip if they were fully voiced. So far, this is only the case for the highlight quests in the game – and only for the most important characters.

Whether the addon will also be released for Retail (i.e., Dragonflight) remains to be seen.

What do you think of such an addon? A cool thing that enhances WoW? Or should it be banned?

Type persuades ChatGPT to create dangerous malware – “Developers would have taken weeks”

Currently, an important discussion is underway: Do AI systems harm humanity on the internet or do they provide a valuable contribution to society? Users are currently testing the moral boundaries of technology and are finding more and more ways to circumvent ethical principles.

Just recently, we reported on MeinMMO how a YouTuber circumvents the rules of ChatGPT to enrich himself.

In principle, AIs are supposed to work with a kind of ethical conscience. If the programs recognize that the answer to a question could help commit a crime or act immorally, then the most prominent program, “ChatGPT,” refuses to answer.

However, these “safety precautions” can be circumvented with clever questions. This has also been demonstrated in the case of a security expert who was able to create highly advanced malware using ChatGPT to steal data from another computer – without writing a line of code.

If you want to know more about the AI ChatGPT, then visit the following article:

More on the topic
What is ChatGPT? Everything you need to know about OpenAI’s AI
von Benedikt Schlotmann

Dangerous malware needs a lot of prior knowledge

How did he do it? The expert is Aaron Mulgrew, who describes his approach in a blog for the cybersecurity company Forcepoint (via forcepoint.com).

Mulgrew is knowledgeable about the process of such attacks and also knows about the general structure of malware. However, he had never programmed anything like this himself.

He explains in the post how he circumvents the moral boundaries of ChatGPT by having it program only parts of the malware. Here, his experience helps him – without knowledge about the structure of such attacks, a layman would probably have reached the end here.

However, Mulgrew managed right away that his malware was not recognized as harmful by many providers.

However, he wanted to go a step further and implement measures to ensure that his program would remain completely undetected. However, ChatGPT recognized this behavior as unethical and illegal again.

Mulgrew simply turned the tables and did not ask for a cover-up of traces but instead approached it through the protection of intellectual property – he wanted to hide the code so that no one can steal it.

ChatGPT played along and wrote the corresponding code so that the remaining providers in Mulgrew’s test module would not recognize his malware – if it was already on the computer.

Then he asked ChatGPT for a suitable infiltration method to access the respective computers. In the end, only 3 of the providers of his test program would recognize the file as harmful. Mulgrew suspects that this is only due to a blanket rejection of these programs against certain file types.

Not because the malware was directly recognized as such.

According to Mulgrew’s assessment, who deals with cyber attacks at a national level, “5 to 10 malware developers would need a few weeks” for a program that he assembled in a few hours.

He even tested the program and was able to steal data from computers and transfer it to a specified account on Google Drive.

The direction of development for AI programs like ChatGPT and how people deal with them will be one of the most exciting topics of the next few years. EU member Italy has already banned access, officially for reasons of youth and data protection.

What do you think about such examples that also show the negative sides of such applications? How should one deal with it? Leave a comment on the topic.

How to make money with ChatGPT is also a big topic: Guy earns almost 40,000 euros at once with the text AI ChatGPT – How does that work?

In a perfect world, the biggest MMORPG today would be World of Warhammer

Almost every gamer knows World of Warcraft, the massive MMORPG from Blizzard. However, there is another world that is more mature, dirtier – and better, as MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus believes. It’s about Warhammer, and the popular WoW almost played there too.

I have been playing World of Warcraft for almost 18 years and love the game for its humor. Blizzard has really done an excellent job here and built a world that I love to dive into. Elves, dwarves, orcs… High Fantasy is simply the best setting for an MMORPG.

Unfortunately, WoW often lacks the bite. The world often feels clean and nice. Sure, occasionally a corpse hangs from a tree, and the undead are quite a gruesome sight. Still, WoW does not fully tap into its potential to really depict the brutality of war as a “world of warcraft” could.

I know this, because such a better fantasy world already exists.

The older I get and the longer I play WoW, the more I wish that Warhammer had been more successful and today would be the biggest MMORPG. The thought that this almost happened is all the more bitter.

The article originally appeared in July 2022 on MeinMMO.

Especially Immortal Empires for Total War: Warhammer 3 makes me more and more excited about the great universe. You can watch the trailer here:

Start video
Total War: Warhammer 3 – Der Trailer zu Immortal Empires

Warhammer is fantasy for adults

Warhammer is the competing universe to Warcraft and is even significantly older. The Warhammer tabletop was released in 1983 – 11 years before Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, the first iteration of Blizzard’s strategy game.

The worlds are very similar, which may be due to the fact that both are heavily inspired by The Lord of the Rings. The similarities go even further: Many races are identical or at least very similar, and their archetypes overlap significantly.

Dwarves, for example, divide into different clans through their traditions, which inhabit different parts of the world. Elves are divided into multiple races, some embody pure magic while others represent the connection to forest and nature.

Even the gods and villains are similar, but Warhammer has a crucial difference: It is dirtier and meaner. Every race is initially racist, or rather: speciesist. Everyone hates each other, and alliances are based on expediency, not on real trust. Warhammer goes further where Warcraft does not dare to.

The idea of a world that is completely and continuously immersed in war comes through much more clearly in Warhammer. The fact that the greenskins exist solely for war, literally multiply like fungi, and follow gods that belong to the “WAR!!!” pantheon is strong evidence for that.

The brutally hard Warhammer: Vermintide 2 or the acclaimed Total War: Warhammer 3 show quite well how such a rough and brutal world can be implemented in video games without being tasteless.

This, by the way, is not just my opinion. Blizzard itself originally wanted to make a Warhammer game, as former Warcraft chief developer Patrick Wyatt explains in an interview with Kotaku. According to him, Blizzard co-founder Allen Adham actually wanted a Warhammer license. But then things turned out differently.

A new Warhammer game, Darktide, is coming soon—but in the Sci-Fi universe 40K, not in Fantasy:

Start video
Warhammer 40K: Darktide im Gameplay-Trailer

Superman is the reason we’re not playing World of Warhammer

Why Warcraft ultimately didn’t become a Warhammer game can be explained quite quickly. Before Warcraft was created, Blizzard had already produced 2 licensed games, together with Detective Comics (DC), as Wyatt explains:

  • The Death and Return of Superman from 1994
  • and Justice League Task Force from 1995

The Death and Return of Superman was in fact the first game released under the Blizzard name. Prior to that, the game studio was called “Silicon & Synapse”.

Do you know the very first games of your favorite developers? Test it in our quiz
von Irina Moritz

The two superhero fighting games didn’t fare particularly well with the audience. For this reason, many of the developers at Blizzard back then resisted creating another foreign world and being bound by rules.

The Blizzard team wanted to create its own universe, and so Warcraft was born – albeit heavily inspired by Warhammer. And you can’t deny the success of the studio; after all, WoW is probably why everyone knows Blizzard today.

So why didn’t Warhammer hold its own? Well, it did. It just didn’t work.

Warhammer does many things better – unfortunately not Games Workshop

Games Workshop, the company behind the universe, created Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning with developer Mythic in 2008, its own Warhammer MMORPG. However, it didn’t last long.

By 2013, the servers were shut down again – officially because the license was not renewed. However, Warhammer Online is said to have attracted very few players, which could have been due to the game’s clear focus on PvP.

Many MMORPGs have already bitten the dust against World of Warcraft:

Start video
5 MMORPGs that Should Have Been WoW Killers But Failed

The decision is somewhat surprising, as Games Workshop is actually known for distributing the Warhammer license to almost anyone. There are dozens of Warhammer games in all possible variations: role-playing games, shooters, strategy games, hack and slay…

Even a second MMO attempt is being made. With Age of Sigmar, a new MMORPG for PC and mobile is set to be released, this time focusing on PvE. Whether that will run better remains to be seen.

However, it seems that the larger interest is in Warhammer 40,000, the science fiction offshoot of the universe. Here, players often spend hundreds to thousands of euros just for the tabletop. The universe is also accompanied by video games, books, and more.

Still, it is hard to understand why Warhammer Online had to die again. Since the closure, fans have simply continued to run their own server and still provide updates even 8 years later. Warhammer Online seems to still enjoy some popularity. Just not as much as WoW.

Warcraft has something that Warhammer lacks: Blizzard

The fact that Games Workshop is focusing more on 40K and less on Warhammer Fantasy may be due to the fact that Warcraft is now the larger and more well-known fantasy universe. And honestly: Without Warcraft, I probably wouldn’t even know Warhammer.

Would Blizzard be as renowned today if they had made World of Warhammer? Maybe, maybe not. The developers back then really had something to offer. But Warcraft was probably their canvas to showcase their skills comprehensively. Without limits.

Still, I am sure that the Warhammer universe has much to offer that no one has really wanted or been able to explore yet. Something that could dethrone World of Warcraft.

Unfortunately, things turned out differently back then, and Allen Adham’s idea of a Warhammer game was never realized. It would have been great if Blizzard had gotten the license and Games Workshop had given them all the freedoms.

Just a perfect scenario. But the world is not perfect – and that’s why we play World of Warcraft, and not World of Warhammer.

By the way, I am sure that at least one famous celebrity would agree with me:

Witcher star Henry Cavill plays Warhammer and has to explain that it is not World of Warcraft

A 14-year-old sniper arrives at CoD MW2 and painfully reminds me of my greatest defeats

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 are bringing a well-known sniper into the game in Season 3 and MeinMMO editor Maik Schneider has to think back to his darkest CoD hours.

I have been playing Call of Duty multiplayer since 2008. With “World at War”, I first ventured online, quickly joined a PlayStation clan, and found many players who are still online in my friends list today.

With the successor, the 2009 Modern Warfare 2, we even played in the PlayStation League. Not a big deal, anyone could participate. But we met twice a week for training and played against other clans on weekends.

We once placed second in a season, something I will never forget. And as you can tell, I still enjoy talking about it today.

But I also have to admit that I was not a good player back then. I was really bad at Call of Duty. And when I see the new weapon coming with Season 3 for Warzone 2 and CoD MW2, I unfortunately do not think of the highlights from back then.

I have to think about my most painful defeats.

Next up is Season 3 of CoD. Here’s a quick trailer:

Start video
CoD MW2 & Warzone 2: Season 3 – Trailer

I was the biggest sniper victim

With Season 3, the FJX Imperium comes into play. Behind the fantasy name hides the “Intervention” – a legendary sniper rifle from CoD MW2 from 2009.

The CoD developers even invited the notorious sniper player FaZeDirty to produce a teaser for the weapon:

https://twitter.com/CallofDuty/status/1642935113523642396

“It’s so good, you’re going to love it,” says Dirty in the teaser. “Get ready,” he adds with a grin. But when I think of the Intervention, I rather lose my laughter.

I was the biggest sniper victim in CoD MW2 2009. My mechanical skills were always surprisingly good, the first hit usually landed. That’s why I played a lot in Hardcore mode – opponents fell quickly here. Unless they were too far away.

That’s why I was always at a disadvantage against snipers. Even if I could land the first hit, I had great difficulties hitting follow-up shots back then. Every Intervention destroyed me.

Moreover, I had little understanding of tactics. I was a team player; my strengths were observation, communication, and morale. We always had fun.

But I fell into every sniper trap, constantly got shot from behind, and had no instinct for the spawns and the flow of the game.

In clan wars, that was negligible. We played Search & Destroy, refined our tactics over months, and nearly every move was agreed upon to a certain extent.

But in public matches and training rounds with other game modes? Oh boy, that’s probably a big part of why I eventually stopped playing public matches. Nostalgia in a different way.

Now I admit something: I am now the nasty sniper who shoots confused players unseen.

It was a slow and painful development, marked by setbacks, doubts, and the occasional angry outburst.

But in CoD or Battlefield, I now more often get my hands on a sniper, and I have to say: It feels damn good to realize that I have gotten so much better over the years.

That’s why I’m even a little excited about the FJX Imperium / Intervention. It is, after all, just “another sniper rifle”, but somehow it’s also something special.

The money-grabbing gacha system kept me away from Genshin Impact for a long time – Now I regret it

For a long time, MeinMMO editor Marie Friske was discouraged by the gacha system in Genshin Impact and now regrets not starting the RPG sooner.

“Gacha systems”, the stuff nightmares are made of for some gamers. Many immediately look for the exit as soon as they hear that a game relies on these random mechanics.

For this very reason, I also gave Genshin Impact a long chance – the thought of a nasty gambling system that requires you to spend thousands of euros to get a somewhat decent character was too present.

Meanwhile, Genshin Impact has become one of my absolute favorite games. I have formed my own opinion about the gacha system – and I regret that it kept me from playing the RPG for so long.

I can still understand the criticism, even to the point of some players completely avoiding gacha systems, but I have come to terms with the random mechanics in Genshin Impact and have found a good way to deal with it.

An important note in advance: The gacha system contains gambling-like mechanics and should therefore be approached with caution. It can easily lead one to spend real money, which for some players has already led to high sums being invested in Genshin Impact.

I would also advise against the game for individuals who already show tendencies toward gambling addiction, as the mechanics work similarly.
If you or someone you know is affected by gambling addiction, you can find more information and a contact point at the Federal Centre for Health Education

This article reflects my personal experience and approach to the gacha system. However, this may vary from person to person and should therefore not be generalized.

Here you can see a video with daily tasks that you can do to earn Genshin Impact characters for free:

The gacha system is not as nasty as I thought

How does the gacha system work in Genshin Impact? You obtain weapons and characters by “pulling” on specific banners. For a pull, you need “fate”, which you can obtain either through in-game currency such as primogems or by paying real money.

With 90 pulls on a banner, you are guaranteed to receive a 5-star character (or weapon). There is a 50% chance that it is the event character you want. With 180 pulls, you are absolutely assured of the character.

A detailed explanation of the gacha system in Genshin Impact can be found here:

Genshin Impact: FAQ about the Gacha system – How Pay2Win is it really?
von Sascha Asendorf

Before I started playing Genshin Impact, I established a single golden rule: I will play through Teyvat as a free-to-play player!  No matter how tempting a game character may be, I will earn them without spending a cent. So far this has worked, although it occasionally becomes quite difficult for me to restrain myself on event banners.

My strategy to avoid impulse pulls: Create a savings plan in advance for the truly important characters. I have already made one for Baizhu, one of my absolute favorite characters:

More on the topic
Why I am currently the greatest nerd under the sun in Genshin Impact
von Marie Friske

What is very important to me in order to enjoy Genshin Impact: I can earn the coveted primogems, the currency you need to pull characters for free.

While it means more effort and grinding, it is doable. Events are especially helpful here, where large amounts of primogems are often offered as rewards. Additionally, the limit of 180 pulls provides a reference point to measure how far I am from my goal of obtaining a character for sure.

Of course, as a free-to-play player, I cannot get all the characters I think are cool, of which there are honestly quite a few. I would have loved to get Alhaitham, Dehya, and Baizhu all, but I must prioritize.

In the end, it is enough for some 5-star characters. Even though you don’t necessarily need them to play through Teyvat. Because even the 4-star characters, which are easier to obtain, sometimes even through events, are completely sufficient.

But when I wander into the shop after hard grinding work with my bag full of primogems and can finally get a long-desired favorite into my team, my joy is all the greater. After all, I earned them with passion.

For anyone, like me, who has been saving for Baizhu, can soon look forward: Update 3.6 will bring us the green-haired doctor and Kaveh as new playable characters.

ARK changes price and content of the remaster because players were loud and angry

The survival hit ARK is set to receive a paid remaster. This made players angry. Now the developers are responding to the criticism.

What kind of remaster is this? Studio Wildcard, the developers of ARK: Survival Evolved, announced a remaster for the survival game on March 31, 2023, and at the same time postponed the sequel ARK 2 to the end of 2024.

The remaster is called ARK Survival Ascended, aims to bring the content of ARK: Survival Evolved to Unreal Engine 5, and will be available exclusively for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.

Why were players loud and angry? ARK players were angry for various reasons and voiced their criticism loudly on social media. Some reasons included:

  • the shutdown of public servers of ARK: Survival Evolved at the release of the remaster and the associated loss of game progress
  • the price of the remaster: at least €39.99 without DLCs, which in total should cost nearly €40 more
  • Players on Xbox and PC could only purchase the remaster in a bundle with ARK 2 for an additional €10, so for €49.99 – the DLCs were still not included
    • This led to criticism because no gameplay for ARK 2 had been shown yet. Players were expected to essentially buy a pig in a poke.

von Dariusz Müller

What is ARK changing about the remaster now? About a week after the announcement of ARK: Survival Ascended, Studio Wildcard responded to the criticism regarding the remaster and made some adjustments (via survivetheark).

You no longer have to buy the remaster including ARK 2 for €50. It will also no longer be necessary to purchase the DLCs separately. However, the entire package is now €20 more expensive. For a total of €60, you now get the remaster ARK: Survival Ascended and the DLCs Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Genesis Part 1, and Genesis Part 2.

Before the change, players would have had to pay €80 to €90 for all content (depending on the platform). The DLCs Scorched Earth, Aberration, and Extinction would have been part of the “Explorer Pass” for €19.99. Genesis Part 1 and Part 2 would have also cost an additional €19.99 together.

Developers explain why the update is not free

Not just an update: In the announcement, Studio Wildcard also explained in detail why it is a paid remaster and not a UE5 update, which players assumed after a Twitter post by Wildcard co-founder Jeremy Stieglitz.

At the time when Stieglitz spoke of a free update, the studio had still planned to take the revised version for the Nintendo Switch and remove the hardware limitations of the Switch. This would mean that the update would not fully utilize the technology’s potential, as stated by Wildcard.

However, Wildcard abandoned that plan and decided to deliver an ARK experience with “cleaned base code.” However, such an update is not possible with ARK: Survival Evolved, as the revision would render existing save files invalid, and mods may not work anymore.

They have therefore not tried to deceive players, but the initial plans and general intentions were different.

Official servers are based on outdated technology

Why are the official servers being shut down? According to Studio Wildcard, the official servers are based on “outdated technology” and consume “significant development resources and time” for operation and maintenance. Additionally, they recognized that the majority of players do not play on official servers.

Since the developers still understand that the loss of progress is not easy for players, they want to allow the transfer of save files to unofficial servers.

Remaster brings crossplay and wild dino babies

What does the remaster bring? In addition to prettier graphics from Unreal Engine 5, the remaster is set to include a rework of the movement and running behavior of dinos. A photo mode and Nvidia DLSS support will also be included. However, the highlights are other innovations.

ARK: Survival Ascended is set to feature blueprint modding on PC and consoles already at release. Additionally, character creation and customization, as well as snap points for building, will be improved and crossplay will be added.

The management of dino babies will also receive a QOL update, and there will be wild dino babies roaming the map.

How ARK could look on Unreal Engine 5 was already shown to us by a well-known modder of the survival hit:

Sony CEO continues to shoot against the purchase of Call of Duty by Microsoft: “Our business would not recover from this”

Microsoft announced more than a year ago that it wants to acquire the “Call of Duty” and “World of Warcraft” company Activision Blizzard for nearly 70 billion dollars. PlayStation manufacturer Sony emerged as the biggest opponent, fighting against the merger to this day.

When Microsoft announced in January 2022 that it wanted to acquire Activision Blizzard for nearly 70 billion dollars, the gaming world held its breath. People thought of free Blizzard games in the Xbox Game Pass or what impact the deal could have on the market.

It quickly became clear: The deal could not simply go through. Regulatory authorities around the world began their reviews – there are concerns that the merger could harm customers, that is, us gamers. Sony stepped in as the advocate of these concerns.

Since then, hardly a week goes by, even hardly a day, without new developments in the case of “Microsoft swallows Activision”. Currently, the headlines revolve around the British regulator CMA (Competition and Markets Authority). They have indicated that they do not see any threat to the console market.

The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, apparently could not let that stand and criticized the CMA’s course with unusually strong, personal words. According to him, Call of Duty could seriously damage Sony’s business.

Call of Duty is considered by Sony as the strongest argument against a merger of Activision and Microsoft. The new Season 3 of the shooter is starting soon here is the trailer:

Start video
CoD MW2 & Warzone 2: Season 3 – Trailer

“Gamers would leave our platform in droves”

Sony has sent a statement to the authority, titled: “Observations from SIE [Sony] on the CMA’s addendum to the provisional findings”. The documents are partially censored but publicly accessible (PDF via assets.publishing.service.gov.uk).

Already in point 2, things get heated: “The reversal of the CMA’s position on its theory of harm to the console market is surprising, unprecedented, and irrational”. Sony criticizes the authority’s change of mind and points out what evidence has already been provided.

Sony accuses the authority of relying solely on an economic model in its market calculations and argues against the results on which the CMA’s new position is based.

In a total of 10 pages, Sony explains why the authority should reconsider its position that the console market would not suffer significant damage from an acquisition.

To this end, they mention different scenarios and examples, such as the statement from Redfall’s Creative Director, Harvey Smith, who said in an interview, Microsoft prevented Redfall on the PlayStation.

A subsection is titled “Gamers are attentive consumers with high expectations”. Here, Sony really goes all out.

Sony outlines the case that Microsoft would intentionally degrade the quality of Call of Duty on the PlayStation. A quote from SIE CEO Jim Ryan made it into the statement:

[A worse version of Call of Duty would lead to] serious harm to our reputation. Our gamers would leave our platform in droves, and network effects would exacerbate the problem. Our business would never recover.

SIE CEO Jim Ryan

Sony considers it proven that Microsoft would do almost anything to gain a competitive advantage in the fiercely competitive console market. And Call of Duty continues to be a key factor in this.

In conclusion, Sony states in a summary that the CMA’s new position is based only on speculation and not on evidence. They hope that the authority will reconsider its opinion.

Another chapter in a battle between two corporations that have already proven to prioritize revenue over customer welfare.

In the end, the acquisition will likely depend on the assessments of three authorities: the regulatory bodies in the USA, the EU, and the British CMA. The decision of one of these authorities would likely also influence the others’ decisions, which is why Sony is now opting for confrontation once again.

Experts view the chances positively that, in the end, a merger will happen without major restrictions for Microsoft and Activision Blizzard. In the end, only time will tell what the decision will look like.

And what consequences this will have for the gaming market in the future.

Survival Hit ARK dies 2023 – Unless you buy a remaster on PS5, Xbox or Steam

In fact, ARK 2 was supposed to be a successor to the popular survival game ARK: Survival Evolved this year. Additionally, an update to Unreal Engine 5 was planned. On March 31, Studio Wildcard then released a roadmap that shows how the survival game will proceed.

The reveal of the ARK roadmap on March 31 did not show any gameplay of ARK 2, as some fans had hoped. Instead, the community’s fears were confirmed: ARK 2 has been postponed to late 2024.

Moreover, the previously teased “Unreal Engine 5” update is not free – it will be released in August 2023 as a paid next-gen remaster on PS5, Xbox, or Steam.

Furthermore, Wildcard announced that with the release of the remaster, the official servers of the survival game will be shut down. Although the game will still be playable on private servers and in single-player mode, those who wish to continue playing on the official servers will need to purchase the remaster.

The reveal trailer of ARK 2, shown at the Game Awards 2020, mentioned a release in 2022. We are now far from that:

Start video
ARK 2: Watch the 4-minute announcement trailer for the survival sequel

What kind of remaster is this? The remaster will be released under the title “ARK: Survival Ascended” and is primarily a next-gen update for the aged survival game. It will be available exclusively for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Last-generation consoles PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch will miss out.

In addition, ARK: Survival Ascended utilizes Unreal Engine 5, bringing not only improved graphics and performance but also cross-platform modding, allowing console players to also use mods.

Update April 8, 2023: After there was a lot of criticism from players, ARK changed the price and content of the remaster.

It will no longer be bundled with ARK 2, but the DLCs Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Genesis Part 1, and Genesis Part 2 are included. The price after the change is 60 euros.

How much does the remaster cost? If you are playing on PS5, ARK: Survival Ascended will cost you $39.99 – which is expected to be around 40 euros. PC and Xbox players will have to pay around 50 euros ($49.99).

Additionally, the add-ons Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, and Genesis Part 1 and 2 are not included in the remaster and will be released in 2024 as paid DLCs. According to Wildcard, the base game contains the map “The Island”, the battle royale mode “Survival of The Fittest”, and “Non-Canon” DLC maps.

  • Explorers Pass – $19.99 (Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction)
  • Genesis Pass – $19.99 (Genesis Part 1, Genesis Part 2)

The remaster costs more for PC and Xbox players because it is exclusively available in a bundle with ARK 2 for the entire first year. So you need to purchase an additional game for which you have not seen any gameplay yet.

Twitch streamer wants to sign Valorant team, backs out at the last minute and ghosts them – now pays out of shame

Félix “xQc” Lengyel is one of the most-watched streamers on Twitch. In March 2023, he wanted to additionally launch his own esports team, but that apparently didn’t happen.

What’s the deal with the team? Alongside flashy gaming setups and outrageously expensive luxury cars, esports teams seem to be the trending status symbol among streamers: Ludwig Ahgren has one, DisguisedToast even has two – though it’s currently not exactly the best time for esports.

The former Overwatch pro xQc apparently also wanted a piece of the cake and to treat himself with a Valorant team. In March, he wanted to sign the Turtle Troop, a team that competes as a “Free Agent” without a larger organization backing them.

However, the deal did not go through and team member Peter “Governor” No has now accused xQc of stringing the players along.

Start video
Valorant celebrates with anthem the most important tournament of the shooter – fans praise the crazy music video

xQc admits to lack of communication

What are the accusations? In a stream with professional player Yassine “Subroza” Taoufik, Governor talked about the contract with xQc. He accuses the streamer of stringing the team along for a month and not getting back to them – he “ghosted” them.

The “Turtle Troop” player says they had already signed a sort of preliminary agreement.

We had signed term sheets and everything, but then he backed out at the last second and just ghosted us.

What does the streamer say? Since xQc is always streaming in some way, it didn’t take long for a response from the “Juicers”. On the same day, he commented on the situation regarding the team in his own stream.

xQc admitted that he hadn’t communicated enough with the team:

It was just a lot going on and I was overwhelmed. I realize that I should have communicated more during that time. There were things I couldn’t talk about.

The streamer also explains that he left the discussions with the team to his managers and assumed they would sort things out.

Streamer pays due to guilty conscience

Why didn’t the deal go through? According to xQc, there was disagreement about the team’s future. The streamer originally planned to buy two star players to build a “super team”.

However, Turtle Troop was less keen on the plan: The players wanted to stay together as a five-man group. Additionally, due to his own difficulties, xQc questioned the decision regarding the purchase.

Are the players left empty-handed? No. As a former Overwatch pro, xQc is aware of how frustrating it must have been for the team to be strung along. Therefore, the streamer says he agreed to pay the team for the lost time:

I felt so bad and was so embarrassed about the situation I was in that I agreed to pay them a month’s salary or half a month’s salary.

The sum was “quite large,” xQc noted.

What exactly was going on with xQc can only be speculated. However, it is likely that it had something to do with his relationship with his ex-girlfriend Adept. This would at least fit with the fact that the streamer is not allowed to talk about the situation that prevented him from going through with the purchase:

In FIFA 23, ‘Trophy Titans’ is now live – Brings extremely strong Icons and Heroes

In FIFA 23 Ultimate Team, the new event “Trophy Titans” is now live. We present the new special cards to you.

What the new event brings: In the new “Trophy Titans” event, there is a whole range of extremely strong new cards. Now there are a total of 13 new icons and 4 new hero cards in the game. Particularly strong are the new icon cards from Zidane (97), Del Piero (95), or Klose (93), who could finally have a playable card.

However, in addition to the new top cards, there are also weakened new icons. The event, for example, brings a 93 and a 92 version of Lahm.

Here you can see all the new cards:

Here you can continue with the original post.

What is “Trophy Titans” as an event? Since this promo has not taken place in any FIFA title before, it is still not possible to say exactly what special features the new cards can offer and what criteria they are selected and receive upgrades.

The name alone already suggests that it might be cards for players who have accumulated a few trophies in their careers. Similar conclusions can also be drawn from the current leaks that we show further down in this post.

Additionally, it can be inferred from the loading screen that there will be new FUT icon and new FUT hero cards.

When does the event start? The new “Trophy Titans” event starts at the end of FUT Birthday, on Good Friday, April 7 at 7:00 PM. This is revealed to us by a loading screen in Ultimate Team.

FIFA 23 Trophy Titans – All leaks about icons and heroes

If you look at the Twitter account of the well-known FUT leaker FUT Sheriff, you can find quite a few leaks there. According to FUT Sheriff, unusually there will be no upgrades for active footballers. Only hero and icon cards are said to receive new, extremely strong special cards.

So if you were looking forward to new special cards for Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, you might be disappointed.

New cards are said to be available for:

  • GK: Casillas (TT-Icon)
  • LB: Roberto Carlos (TT-Icon)
  • CDM: Essien (TT-Icon)
  • CAM: Zidane (TT-Icon)
  • CB: Lucio (TT-Hero)
  • ST: Bergkamp (TT-Icon)
  • RB: Lahm (TT-Icon)
  • CM: Vieira (TT-Icon)
  • CDM: Yaya Touré (TT-Hero)

Furthermore, the leaker mentions that there could even be two different versions for some of the new special cards. We are certainly excited and will update this post as soon as there are new leaks and information.

You should consider the following regarding leaks: Which new special cards will actually end up in FUT cannot be said at this time. The previous names are merely leaks and no official information from EA. Certainty regarding the new cards will probably only come at the start of the event.

The FUT Birthday is currently still ongoing in FIFA 23 Ultimate. If you need help finding the exchange tokens, feel free to check here:

Destiny 2: Xur today – location and offer on 07.04

Before the Easter Bunny appears, Xur will. He arrives this Friday in the Destiny 2 universe and will sell his exotic goods to you all weekend long. Provided you know where to find him. But don’t worry, MeinMMO will tell you.

Who is Xur? For those of you who don’t know Xur yet – he is essentially the treasurer of the universe and certainly the most mysterious NPC trader in Destiny 2. His appearance is curious and his visits are rare.

But he appears every week to sell you exotic weapons and gear. You can visit him and then shop for some material from him. But beware – Xur appears in a different location each week and it is the Guardians’ task to find him.

Before we tell you what Xur has on offer and where he is hiding this time, you can discover our obligatory weekly review.

What happened this week in Destiny 2? The Guardians discovered a new bug this week that is particularly helpful for solo players. With it, everything seems to die by itself and it almost looks like bosses are giving up voluntarily. The reason is a poison bug that deals almost infinite damage.

Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2, also admitted that the Lightfall experience “Is not what we planned” and promises extensive improvements:

When does Xur come? As a trader of rare exotic goods in Destiny 2, Xur visits the universe every Friday at 7:00 PM. To shop with him, you only need some in-game currency so that the gaps in your collection can shrink faster.

Where is Xur? This is his hideout for the weekend

Xur’s location: Although Xur only actively uses a few location spots in the destinations, no Guardian knows where he will land before 7:00 PM.

Iron Banner with Eruption in Season 20

iron-banner-fire-armor-destiny2

This is what the Iron Banner is about: This week is a new chance in Season 20 to dive into the Iron Banner and fight for glory and honor. Unlike in the PvP endgame, the “Trials of Osiris”, it is not about winning at all costs, but also about having fun.

It requires skill, strategy, and most importantly, teamwork. Because those who fight alone will quickly realize that they have a lesser chance against cooperating opponents. So grab your favorite weapon, howl as a pack, and show everyone who the real ruler of the Iron Banner is.

Which mode will be played this week: Currently you can experience “Eruption” in the Iron Banner. Guardians receive an energy boost to their Light abilities the longer their current killstreak lasts.

This loot is available in the Iron Banner: In the Iron Banner, Guardians can earn and also focus many weapons.

The Origin trait “Creeping Wolf” ensures that through these weapons, you have an improved radar when at low health and achieving killing blows against Guardians, and you are removed from the enemy radar.

Additionally, Lord Saladin offers armor focusing for old seasons, allowing you to now complete your collection directly.

When does the Iron Banner officially end? Lord Saladin’s PvP activities end with the Weekly Reset on April 11 at 7:00 PM. That is also the departure time for Xur.

The Iron Banner may end this week, but the fight for survival and the quest for the best weapons and gear goes on.

What was your best experience in the Iron Banner? Have you ever won a match where you were about to lose? Or perhaps you accomplished an epic feat that made you an immortal Iron Wolf? Feel free to share it in the comments. We are excited to hear your stories.

Destiny 2 is only getting boring because you are too lazy

It is foolish to play only a single MMORPG

MMORPGs are currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity. However, many players often wait for that “one MMORPG” that they can play forever. However, MeinMMO editor Alexander Leitsch finds this attitude foolish.

For many years, I only played one MMORPG: Guild Wars 1. From 2006 to 2011, I didn’t know any other game and have spent more than 10,000 hours in it.

However, in 2011, I opened myself up to the MMORPG world. I played games like SWTOR, Aion, and later also WoW. And that broadened my horizons. While I focused fully on Guild Wars 2 for many years – partly due to my own fansite – I also tried other games like Blade & Soul, WildStar, ESO, and Black Desert.

By now, I am firmly convinced that every MMORPG fan should definitely try multiple games. The idea of fully focusing on just one game should be thrown overboard immediately.

Bridging Content Droughts with Alternatives

If you play multiple MMORPGs, you practically never experience a content drought. If there’s nothing happening in Guild Wars 2 and all story content and achievements are completed, I participate in a new season in Black Desert or test the latest DLC in ESO.

In the last 12 months, I particularly noticed this with my friends who have been playing WoW for decades. They reacted very differently to the relatively little content during this time:

  • One group decided to try other MMORPGs. They joined the hype wave around FFXIV, which Asmongold and other WoW streamers sparked. Later, this group also looked into ESO together. They had a really good time.
  • A few of my friends remained loyal only to WoW and didn’t want to cancel their subscription. Although they didn’t have a bad time – after all, they were still playing their favorite game – my gut feeling tells me that 2021 was significantly more entertaining for group 1.

I haven’t experienced a content drought in Guild Wars 2 since waiting for Heart of Thorns in 2015. Instead, I have continually dedicated myself to new MMORPGs, even if only for a few dozen hours of gameplay because it ultimately didn’t turn out to be fun enough.

You Experience Cool Niche Games

Most MMORPGs that have been released in recent years have been rather flops. I especially think of Bless Online, Elyon, and Crowfall. But I would like to positively highlight two niche games at this point.

One game is PSO2: New Genesis. In this sci-fi MMORPG, things get action-packed, and the combat system is just a lot of fun. Unfortunately, there is a lack of content and varied experiences, but the battles easily make up for it.

The other game is Broken Ranks. It is a 2.5D MMORPG with turn-based combat. This combat system is a lot of fun for me, offers a lot of depth, and makes the whole game a real hidden gem. It was already a big surprise for me in 2022.

I would probably never have tried both games if I had focused only on one big MMORPG. I would also have missed out on some really crazy experiences. My favorite anecdote by now is the character editor from Chimeraland. The gameplay is rather weak, but creating the craziest beasts was a lot of fun for me.

You Learn to Love “Your MMORPG” Even More

Every player has a favorite MMORPG, and that’s good. However, over time, that game can get boring because you have seen and experienced everything.

When you switch games – no matter which MMORPG – you suddenly learn to appreciate aspects you previously took for granted. For me, these are usually the incredibly good combat system, the jumping puzzles, and the wardrobe/dye system from Guild Wars 2. No other game compares.

That’s why I had so much fun playing Guild Wars 2 again as part of the new expansion End of Dragons. I was able to enjoy the strengths of my favorite game again. It simply offers so much comfort compared to New World and Lost Ark, which I had been addicted to in the previous months.

I Play What Matches My Mood

If you play multiple MMORPGs, you can freely choose what you want to experience right now. As a father, I currently only have about one to two hours each evening and want to use them in a way that perfectly takes me out of everyday life:

  • If I want to dive into challenging dungeons or raids, I play Trials in ESO or dungeons in Lost Ark (here, Final Fantasy XIV would surely be the best solution, but I never got the hang of it)
  • If I want to enjoy good PvP arenas, I play Guild Wars 2 or Lost Ark
  • If I want to grind mindlessly, enjoy battles, and watch a series on the side, I play New World or Black Desert
  • If I want to follow a cool new story, I choose ESO or SWTOR

There is no MMORPG that offers me all that. But with multiple games, I am so flexible that I can shape my evening exactly as I need it right now.

The Next WoW Won’t Come

The release of WoW was a phenomenon. It sparked a hype and experienced a growth over the years that is hardly possible today. However, that was likely a one-time thing for this genre.

Because there are simply too many good MMORPGs now and not enough opportunities to revolutionize the genre. Moreover, each new game will offer less content than those already established.

Only a significant technical change could build such hype again, if something like Sword Art or Ready Player One becomes reality. Twitch streamer Asmongold believes that too. But we are probably still years to decades away from that.

Switching Games Can Disrupt Guild Dynamics

The only problem with switching between many MMORPGs is holding your core group together, with whom you like to complete dungeons and raids or participate in PvP. Such a group can quickly fall apart with many game switches.

I have various approaches myself:

  • So, I am in larger community guilds in GW2 and ESO, where we always do things together, but without obligations.
  • My guild in BDO, on the other hand, knows exactly that I am an editor at MeinMMO and does not expect an active player, but supports me when I have questions or want to experience content.
  • In New World and SWTOR, I know enough players who take me along when I want to dive deeper into the MMORPGs again.
  • Additionally, I have a fun group on Discord with my colleague Mark Sellner that is not limited to one game but likes to try new games, like recently New World and Lost Ark, or just plays a round of LoL in the evening.

With these methods, I maintain good contacts with various players and always have a group available when I want to run a dungeon or experience PvP.

What do you think about this topic? Do you play multiple MMORPGs simultaneously, or do you remain loyal to just one game and one guild? Feel free to write it in the comments.
