Baldur’s Gate 3 is a fantastic game due to the multiplayer aspect, where you can spend a lot of time with friends. On reddit, a gamer shares heartwarming moments with his son in the game. Unfortunately, he accidentally broke the child’s heart during a long rest.
Who is the gamer-son duo? Reddit user Mahote writes in the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit about himself and his 14-year-old son. The son is an absolute band geek, currently playing two different instruments and participating in two different band classes. He received his own gaming laptop for Christmas 2023.
Mahote himself seems to be a very proud parent who enjoys playing video games. The gamer is active on reddit in various subreddits, including Baldur’s Gate 3, Warhammer, and D&D. Since his son got his own gaming laptop, they have been playing Baldur’s Gate 3 together.
What happened to the two in Baldur’s Gate 3? In his post, Mahote describes how he and his son played Baldur’s Gate 3 over the past weekend of January 6th and 7th. According to the story, the boy had a lot of fun.
Especially the Tiefling bard Alfira seems to have captured the son’s heart: Alfira is one of the refugees from Elturel, seeking shelter from goblins in the Emerald Grove at the beginning of Act 1. She hopes to travel to Baldur’s Gate and master the lute of her deceased mentor Lihala.
Particularly the latter excites the boy, as he is currently learning to play the guitar.
The shared gameplay between son and Mahote went well for quite some time. When Alfira joined the player group, it seemingly brought great joy to the young man. Everything was going well—until they took a long rest.
Mahote plays the Dark Urge
, one of the six Origin characters who has a very dark past. However, the character cannot remember it anymore. An unavoidable plot point is that a bard—usually Alfira—joins the group and gets murdered by the player character.
This also happened in the playthrough of reddit user Mahote and his son. It seemingly broke the teenager’s heart.
How did Mahote react to the event? As a responsible parent, Mahote took care of his son. The gamer was very glad for the opportunity to support the teenager during this emotional matter. However, it was by no means easy to help the young man get over the loss of his favorite NPC.
In a follow-up addition, Mahote mentions that he is well aware of the kinds of things kids encounter today through friends, media, etc. Therefore, it is very important to him that his son experiences situations like this with a parent.
For Mahote, this was an opportunity to help his child learn to cope with such difficult situations and the resulting feelings.
What does the reddit community say? A large part of the community reacts with sympathy. Playthroughs with the Dark Urge are very popular among gamers, which is why many commentators on reddit can empathize with the son:

Additionally, user somethingaboutme notes that the Dark Urge is likely to dominate the run, which might make the son feel neglected with a normal character. Mahote replied that they will probably do precisely that.
All in all, Mahote and his son seem to be handling the situation well. Perhaps a new run without the Dark Urge is indeed a good idea for them. Baldur’s Gate 3 has much more to offer than just tragic content. For example, if you choose the dumbest class, you can unlock the funniest dialogue options.
