Even before the release of the Steam Machine, there were rumors that there could be more behind the new device. Some discussed on Reddit, that Valve could link the purchase of a Steam Machine with an exclusive Half-Life 3.
Valve has since clarified that there will be no exclusive games for the Steam Machine and that they are not currently developing anything for the device. They consider the Steam platform as a whole.
There will be no exclusive games for the Steam Machine
Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais explained to Bloomberg that they do not want to develop and release an exclusive game alongside the Steam Machine. It is not a good idea to dictate to players where they can play their games. He said:
I don’t think it’s a good model to dictate to players where they can play a game – at least not for us. We are much more interested in offering the entire PC catalog as our ‘exclusivity at launch’.
So you shouldn’t expect an exclusive title to be released for the Steam Machine. There is therefore no Fomo (Fear of missing out) if you can’t or don’t want to buy a Steam Machine because it is currently simply too expensive for you.
The competition probably sees it differently: The main competitor Epic, for example, relied for years on exclusive titles that could only be purchased there to lure players away from Steam. Epic CEO Sweeney explained back then that they wanted to break Steam’s bad monopoly in the gaming sector, as it would force developers to relinquish 30% of their profits.
The Steam Controller currently has long delivery times. With the Steam Machine, which is set to be released in 2026, this is probably no different.
