The end of New World is set to take place in January 2027. However, players’ hopes lie on a sale. What it needs for that and how the chances look is explained by a former developer.
Who should buy New World? Before dealing with the details behind a continued operation of New World, one first needs to find a buyer. For Amazon will shut down the MMORPG as scheduled on January 31st and will no longer operate it themselves.
Currently, the studio Facepunch
is being considered as a potential buyer of the once so successful MMORPG. The developers commented after the announced end of New World on x.com, stating that they are generally interested in the project.
Through Rust, they also have sufficient experience with online titles to realistically implement such a project. Just on March 24th, the employee @ErrnieGerrn stated on x.com again that they would like to buy New World.
Previously, there were also discussions with Amazon Games, during which both sides signed a confidentiality agreement. Therefore, no details regarding the rescue can be expected until the conclusion of the possible negotiations.

Former developer explains what New World needs
Who is it about? The former lead world designer of New World, David McKenzie, participated in a “Ask me anything” format on Reddit in early March 2026. There, he answered many of the burning questions of the community.
One question that arose was about the chances of New World being bought. However, the former developer didn’t see things as rosy:
I hope for the best, because New World was the most exciting project I have ever worked on. I would love to be involved again.
A sale of New World would also mean having to bring back most of the developers who worked on it, but I suspect that chance has already passed. I have my doubts whether New World will be bought by another developer, as the engine of New World requires very specific expertise.

However, the developer states that there were still many ideas behind the scenes. The three biggest themes that New World should have reached were public wars, gardening, and sailing. All themes that players would have liked to see in the MMORPG.
