Sony stops disc production. The decision is heavily criticized, but it is unlikely to change. This is shown by the most important facility for disc production in Austria. Because here they already want to retrain all employees for new products.
Sony unexpectedly announced that it wants to stop the production and sale of physical games. This came as a surprise to many and the criticism of the decision is accordingly high.
Many are now hoping that Sony will reverse its decision, when confronted with so much criticism. But Sony has already made a decision in Austria that shows that it may be too late for this hope.
Sony’s largest disc production is switching its manufacturing to micro-lenses
What does this have to do with Austria? In Thalgau, Austria, stands the most important production facility for discs from Sony. According to statements from the company manager in Austria, the facility produces half of its discs for PlayStation, with 600,000 discs leaving the facility daily.
However, in Thalgau, long-planned significant changes are underway, and Sony’s announcement that it wants to eliminate the physical disc does not come as a surprise to the facility and its head. The head of “Micro Optics” at Sony DADC, Markus Streibl stated to ORF that these changes had been foreseeable for some time:
According to the company’s management, around 30 million euros have recently been invested in new technologies for the production of optical micro-lenses at the facility. This will be the new business area. These “Micro Optics” are now needed in various fields, including mobile phones, vehicles, medical technology, and industrial sensors.
Next year, Sony plans to start mass production with optical micro-lenses, and employees are already being retrained. A return to disc production now seems almost impossible.
Sony is stopping physical games for the PlayStation. MeinMMO editor Benedikt Schlotmann believes he has no reason to buy a PS6 anymore. And many others feel similarly. The strategy of focusing exclusively on digital seems sensible, but it has still caught many players off guard: After 10 years of PlayStation, Sony has killed the PS6 for me – and many of you feel the same way
