World of Warcraft finally on Xbox. At least that is the dream that the team from World of Warcraft has and which is talked about “every day.”
With its 20 years, World of Warcraft is one of the longest-running and most popular MMORPGs of all time. Yet where other games have already taken the plunge, WoW is still hesitant: the release on consoles.
Many interviews with key developers around World of Warcraft have been published time and again. The topic of a console version has also come up. It is something that the team discusses repeatedly.
What was said? GamesRadar had the opportunity to speak with Holly Longdale (Executive Producer and Vice President of World of Warcraft) and ask about a console version – specifically about an Xbox variant. She said:
The dream remains. We are so focused on delivering what our players deserve with the expansions. To be honest, there is currently no room for that conversation. But you know, the dream is real.
When asked about technical difficulties and whether they could be an obstacle, she continued:
That probably depends on who you ask. I honestly believe that they do not exist. I think we are in a pretty good position, which is why we are talking about it.
Somewhat suspicious is Holly Longdale’s statement in the conversation with Eurogamer. In response to the question, she said: “I want to say that nothing is impossible. But I can’t say more than that.”
She is said to have laughed at this and wanted to add something – but then quickly corrected herself and repeated: “No, that is all I will say about that.”
This at least leaves room for benevolent interpretation.
Can you play WoW with a gamepad? One of the biggest questions is whether you could even play a game with so many abilities and menus on a console. After all, it must be difficult to select the more than 30 different abilities of each class in the heat of battle with a gamepad while also avoiding boss mechanics.
In fact, this question is no longer relevant. Since “Shadowlands,” World of Warcraft already has integrated controller support. While this is primarily a way to expand the accessibility of the game – for players who cannot use a keyboard and mouse – it shows: WoW with a gamepad is possible, and some even raid very successfully with it.
From a gaming perspective, there is therefore no hurdle.
We tested how well it works back then.
Playing WoW on Xbox – But when?
When can we expect it? For the foreseeable future, one should probably not expect a port of World of Warcraft to consoles – in any case, 2024 will probably be off the table. However, if you are already opening a new chapter with the World Soul saga, that would probably also be the perfect time to finally take the plunge.
That the developers are still talking about this topic is a good thing. It is probably only a matter of time before the final decision is made to bring WoW finally to consoles – or at least to Xbox. After all, you now have Microsoft behind you, and the likelihood of a WoW port to Xbox is greater than ever before.
Would you want to play WoW on consoles? Or does it remain a pure PC game for you?
