For MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes, crime stories often look like the perfect movies for boomers, but Hugh Jackman and a group of sheep still managed to impress him in a new film on Prime Video.
Classic crime stories are actually not a genre that strongly concerns me, neither visually nor narratively. Glennkill: The Sheep Crime is at first glance no exception. An idyllic village with beautiful scenery is shaken after the shepherd George, played by Hugh Jackman, dies and suddenly another heir appears.
That sounds like something my grandma would watch, but a gimmick still motivated me to watch: George’s sheep want to solve the case, can talk to each other, and have to help the policeman in some way.
And what can I say: I enjoyed every minute of Glennkill: The Sheep Crime, even though the actual case is not particularly good.

Shallow, but incredibly likeable
In the crime comedy itself, George, who read crime stories to his sheep daily, says that these cases always follow certain rules, and that is also reflected in the film’s case. It is not particularly clever or exciting, but I didn’t care about that early on.
The real stars of the film are the sheep, who somehow have to help the bumbling policeman, played by Nicholas Braun, solve the murder case. This leads to various slapstick situations that give the film a nice lightness, creating a cozy atmosphere in the cinema or on your own couch. You feel like you are wrapped in a blanket.
The sheep are in an interesting situation in the film because they must solve the murder but cannot simply communicate with humans. On the other hand, they must explore a world beyond their idyllic meadow – and that is simply fun and works so well because the case itself is very shallow.
Additionally, there is another theme within the flock of sheep that deals with exclusion and suppression. The film even manages to create emotional moments that nicely round off the cozy atmosphere.
All of this is highlighted by the cast.
You can feel the fun with the actors as well
I watched the film in German and must especially praise Anke Engelke (voice of sheep Lily) and Bastian Pastewka (voice of sheep Mopple). The two give the sheep the lightness that springs from the film and create a beautiful chemistry, just with their voices.
But the actors also clearly had fun. Especially Hugh Jackman (George), Nicholas Galitzine (Elliot), and Emma Thompson brought me much joy. I just enjoy watching Hugh Jackman, especially when he is not playing just the tough guy like in Wolverine.
Glennkill: A Sheep Crime knows exactly where its strengths lie and manages to tell a light, entertaining, and above all fun experience in its 110 minutes. And honestly: I believe everyone can enjoy the film. Especially with a partner or friends, Glennkill: A Sheep Crime is a great crime story that is not just suitable for boomers.
