There are so many series on Netflix that you sometimes miss one. MyMMO editor Nikolas Hernes has stumbled upon an action series from 2025 that has excited him – especially because of the villain.
Which series is it? In 2025, the South Korean action thriller series Trigger was released. Although I was quite interested, the series lingered on my watchlist for a long time. However, since I’m on a Korean series trip after Teach You A Lesson, I finally caught up with Trigger.
The series revolves around the police officer Lee Do, who investigates a mysterious case in which someone sends weapons to people. These are only individuals who feel abandoned or ostracized by society. In a country like South Korea, where there is strict gun legislation, this not only leads to disasters but also to social conflicts.
Although the premise alone sounds exciting, the real star is the villain Moon Baek, who captivated me despite his questionable morals and reminded me of legendary villains like Light.
Here you can watch the English trailer for Trigger (the series is also available in German audio):
One of the best villains in a long time
What makes Trigger so good? For me, the dynamic between the main character and the villain works best. Lee Do, played by Kim Nam-gil, is a kind-hearted and calm police officer who has a troubled past with weapons. Opposing him is Moon Baek, played by Kim Young-kwang, who has a skewed view of justice and power due to a trauma.
The games they play remind me of the dynamics between Light and L in Death Note. Two characters confront each other with completely different moral understandings. In this case, Moon Baek is the true star. He dominates every scene and exudes a certain charm – in contrast to his goals.
Without giving too much away: He wants to disrupt the social order and break the known norms and power structures – weapons are not just for violence; they are meant to create a societal conflict that threatens the pillars of the country.
Combined with the individual stories within the episodes, this creates a good mix, although Trigger fails to satisfactorily conclude the societal themes. The series operates more under the motto Style over Substance
.
Style, however, is something Trigger does particularly well.
Suspense and stylish action
How is the action and suspense in Trigger? To start: Trigger is not for the faint of heart. This is not due to excessively brutal scenes, but to themes like bullying, rampage, and gun violence. Those who have issues with such topics should not watch the series.
Here, I would have liked to see a bit more sensitivity. Because these are indeed heavy topics that are often subordinated to the action and suspense. One should not expect a profound analysis of social issues in Trigger.
The fight sequences and action scenes are well shot and, typical for many Korean series, beautifully staged – with a strong focus on style. Fight scenes are clear, and especially the gun battles often remind one of John Wick, even if they are not quite as creative.
Additionally, the architecture of the buildings is utilized to create suspense. The series can compete with strong thrillers because the themes always resonate and make one reflect on the seemingly hopeless events.
Do you know Trigger and do you have any other series recommendations on Netflix? Feel free to write them to us in the comments. South Korea has produced many strong series, including Bloodhounds: A hard action series on Netflix showcased the best fights I’ve seen since John Wick 4
