Leya urges you to try one of the best RPGs: That Divinity: Original Sin 2 (DOS2) belongs to the absolute milestones of the genre is no secret. After Larian Studios announced that, after Baldur’s Gate 3, a new Divinity is on the way, a friend and I felt nostalgic. We started a new co-op campaign – and what can I say? Even almost ten years after release, this RPG is still a whole lot of fun.
This is mainly due to the brilliant sandbox: You can follow any path you like. Dead end? Then just turn around and continue elsewhere. However, the centerpiece remains the turn-based combat system, which cleverly utilizes the environment. If you shoot at an oil barrel, the ground catches fire. If it rains afterward, steam is created that you can electrify with lightning to stun enemies. By the way, get used to the fact that you will accidentally set each other on fire in co-op!
But what makes the co-op mode so brilliant?
- Total freedom: You can move completely autonomously from each other. While one person haggles for the best prices in the city (or robs a merchant), the other stumbles into a cave on the beach, accidentally triggers a boss fight, and shouts for help on Discord.
- Collaborative puzzling: The battles are challenging. You work together like on a puzzle, combining the abilities (partner puts everything underwater, you throw in the lightning) and laugh your heads off when everything goes horribly wrong and you somehow have to save the fight in chaos.
- Smooth gameplay loop: Since DOS2, unlike Baldur’s Gate 3, has hardly any classic cutscenes, the co-op runs much smoother. You don’t spend ages waiting while the other is stuck in a cinematic, keeping the conversation alive.
Currently, the Divine Edition of Divinity: Original Sin 2 is 75% off on Steam. Until June 1, you pay 14.99 euros instead of the usual 59.99 euros. And even if you miss the sale: Keep your eyes open; the game is fortunately regularly on offer!
