What happened? In the final phase of the battle against Kid Buu, Vegeta is beaten by the antagonist to buy time for Son-Goku, who is gathering energy for an attack. During this, Vegeta delivers an internal monologue, revealing that he no longer feels that strong sense of rivalry towards his Saiyan colleague.
Vegeta realizes that he has always fought to destroy enemies and feed his own pride. Goku, on the other hand, fights not to kill or triumph, but to break his own limits.
Why is this moment so important? Vegeta had previously been consumed by toxic envy for years. He never understood how a lower-ranked warrior like Goku could consistently surpass him. In the monologue, however, he finally recognizes the truth.
In this moment, Vegeta lets go of his decades-long bitterness, smiles, and says the iconic line: “You are better than me, Kakarot. You are number 1.” By saying this, he effectively defeats his own selfishness and finds inner peace, alongside his pathological urge to be better than Goku.
