What happened? In the final phase of the fight against Kid Buu, Vegeta is overwhelmed by the antagonist to buy Son-Goku time, who is currently gathering energy for an attack. During this, Vegeta delivers an inner monologue, where it becomes clear that he no longer possesses that strong feeling of rivalry towards his Saiyan colleague.
Vegeta realizes that he has only fought to annihilate enemies and nourish his own pride. Goku, on the other hand, fights not to kill or to triumph, but to surpass his own limits.
Why is this moment so important? Vegeta had previously been consumed by toxic envy for years. He never understood how a low-ranking warrior like Goku could surpass him time and again. In the monologue, however, he finally recognizes the truth.
In this moment, Vegeta lets go of his decades-long bitterness, smiles, and says the iconic line: “You are better than I am, Kakarott. You are number 1.” In a way, he defeats his own selfishness with this statement and finds an inner peace with his obsessive drive to be better than Goku.
