After several tests, Diablo Immortal is currently in the final stage of development. The MMO is expected to be released in the first half of 2022. But even now fans speculate about the mechanics of the game, leading to wild conjectures.
What items are we talking about? Legendary gems are among the best items in Diablo Immortal. They enhance your attributes and grant you special properties or abilities, similar to Diablo 3.
Each of these gems comes with different ranks and quality levels. The highest level is 5 stars, and the highest rank is 20. You can equip a total of 6 of them, one in each main slot of your gear.
Blizzard has already promised that casuals will have a fair chance in Diablo Immortal. Nevertheless, some players now suspect that it will take you 40 years or longer to fully upgrade the gems (via reddit).
Why does it take so long? Upgrading the gems required various items and materials in the last beta of Immortal. You acquire these from other legendary gems.
However, the opportunities to obtain these gems were limited in the last test. The reddit user Desperate-Army3618 breaks down how long it should all take:
- a guaranteed gem per week as well as a 25% daily chance for another
- the user estimates an average of 12 gems per month
- 50 gems are required to increase a 5-star gem by one rank
- that corresponds to 4.16 months
- at 20 ranks, it takes a gem alone 83.33 months – or nearly 7 years
- for 6 equipable gems, that amounts to 500 months – or nearly 42 years
Another user notes that you would first have to obtain these gems. The chance for a 5-star gem is said to be 5%. With this information, the duration could even be 165 years.
No one knows yet how it will really be
Does it really take that long? Many players are now worried that they have no chance without paying. However, compared to other mobile games, they consider it likely that this is indeed intended.
The user teknofly explains, however, that some information was not taken into account. For example, there are limited events and sources like vendors from whom you can obtain the gems. Furthermore, it is still not clear what content will be changed.
In our recent interview with the heads of Diablo Immortal, they told us that lots of feedback from the beta is still to be implemented. Therefore, there will be many changes, probably including this – as the topic has been preoccupying the community for quite some time.

Do I even need the items? According to user Chrisy_B, the gems at maximum rank are not necessary at all to participate in the endgame activities. Free2Play players are able to keep up without paying for upgrades.
All content, whether dungeons, raids or PvP, is also feasible through “regular grind”. Paragon levels and strong legendaries should not be underestimated.
How Diablo Immortal handles the whole situation in the end will only be decided at release or shortly before. There is still no date for this, but a very good estimate:
