The Summer Game Fest 2026 had many announcements to offer once again. But it’s not just the games themselves that are causing heated discussions. Currently, fans are worried about the friendship between Hideo Kojima and Geoff Keighley.
Looking at Geoff Keighley’s recent gaming shows, the legendary developer Hideo Kojima was usually there. The two seemed almost inseparable – like best friends. At Keighley’s shows, Kojima often had a platform to announce his upcoming projects.

Often they are fan arts of his games, but sometimes also retweets of trailers or other announcements that are not directly related to him. While he used to like retweeting his tweets before Keighley’s shows, that was completely absent during the Summer Game Fest 2026.
As a result, some fans are currently constructing a sort of celebrity breakup between the two, allegedly stemming from the Game Awards 2025. At that time, Kojima’s title, Death Stranding 2, lost to the big winner Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Despite 7 nominations, Death Stranding 2 did not win a single award. Furthermore, there was no appearance by Kojima at the Summer Game Fest 2026.

Are there reactions from Kojima or Keighley? There probably won’t be a proper statement from either of them, but at least they are fueling the fans’ fun with their own reactions. Hideo Kojima reposted the tweet from journalist Gene Park (source x.com), who tweeted that one should not show Geoff Keighley a picture of Park and Kojima.
Keighley responded in the comments with a GIF captioned I am so happy and not jealous at all.
Keighley has been quite active in some users’ posts. For instance, he reacted under the video collage from @wiithteeth with a viral GIF of Kojima’s reaction to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 winning (source: x.com).
Is there more to it? Whether Kojima was really upset because Death Stranding 2 didn’t win anything, we’ll probably never officially find out, but that an entire friendship breaks apart because of an award show seems questionable. Especially since Keighley doesn’t choose the winners himself.
Kojima’s lack of presence could simply be argued as him having nothing to show at the moment. However, their humorous reactions show that they are following the tragedy of their breakup themselves.
