For many, it is the “spiritual successor to Mass Effect” – now there is gameplay for Exodus. And it looks really strong.
The Mass Effect trilogy has left a significant gap for fans. One that the successor Andromeda could not fill. Problems at launch and questionable design decisions tarnished the legacy of one of the greatest sci-fi stories. However, there are games that have clearly set out to fill this gap.
One of those games is Exodus. For years, there have been story trailers and plenty of information, but until now, we could only get a small glimpse of the gameplay. Now there is an extended gameplay trailer, where we see 20 minutes of in-game sequences in all their glory.
You can watch the older story trailer here:
Difficult decisions, action battles, and great companions
What does the trailer show? The gameplay trailer presents a wild mix of everything the game has to offer. There are both dialogue sequences with choice options and their consequences, as well as exploration and, of course, action. Battles are fought with various weapons and superhuman powers, and a cover system is also in play – which may awaken some memories. You can watch the trailer on YouTube.
But other aspects also remind of Mass Effect. In decisions, there is a kind of moral system. ME veterans still remember the choices between “Paragon” and “Renegade” – in Exodus it is quite similar. You choose between “Paragon” and “Immortal”. While the first option seems mostly righteous and more peace-loving, the second is more reckless and generally rougher.
There will also be decisions of great consequence. In one mission, you could eliminate all enemies by simply opening the airlock of the spaceship and sending them to their deaths. But then civilians and other innocents could also be affected. Are you willing to make that sacrifice? Or would you rather risk the increased danger but not jeopardize innocent lives?
When does Exodus come out? There is still no concrete release date for Exodus. Only the year is known – 2027. In the best case, we may be able to travel through space again in about half a year, in the worst case, it could still take 18 months.
Cortyn says: I am a little annoyed that by watching the trailer, I have already spoiled some parts of the story for myself, but that’s manageable. Because my hype for this game has significantly increased. If the final game can live up to even a fraction of what the extended gameplay trailer promises, then we are in for a sci-fi epic that we will likely be talking about for many years – perhaps as enthusiastically as we do about the Mass Effect trilogy.
It is obvious that Exodus also draws a lot of inspiration from it. The combat system, the presentation, the overall feel of the worlds strongly reminds of the BioWare titles. But that is exactly what many fans have been longing for for years. I really hope that Exodus can meet the expectations. Because it already looks like a game in which I can completely lose myself for a week or longer.
A similar feast could also be the Expanse game, which is also not far away…
